Do we Need a Neighbourhood Watch? The community association has been contacted to discuss establishing or re-establishing neighbourhood watches as part of the city of Ottawa’s Neighbourhood Watch program. As a board, we are looking into it, but wondering if this is a solution in search of a problem. We took a look at the crime rates in our community to see how it compares to other areas, explore other options to increase the safety of our community and get feedback on how we should proceed.

Rain Ready Ottawa is a City program that supports people in retrofitting their property to reduce stormwater runoff and build climate resiliency to extreme weather events.

Ottawa’s Growing Problem With Invasive Plants Understanding the Threat and How We Can Help Combat Them by: The CGOWCA Environment Committee Ottawa is known for its beautiful natural landscapes, however, a growing threat to local biodiversity and ecosystems is the proliferation of invasive plant species. These non-native plants disrupt local habitats, outcompete native vegetation, and pose a serious risk to wildlife. The good news is, we can play a pivotal role in addressing this issue by raising awareness, and taking proactive steps to remove invasive species from our community and our own backyards.

Bringing Kids and All Of Us Back to Reality Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com I recently took responsibility for a group of 7-8-year-old scouts (castor with “les Scouts d’Orléans”). I have been immersed in learning the new program, as I have never been involved at that level as an adult and have been out of the Scouts for a long time. I have been tangentially aware of the problems our kids face as a father of two kids (3 and 7), but I have not taken a deep dive into those issues until now.

I would like to see our community become more kid-friendly in the coming years. We have a lot to lose if we continue creating real-world spaces that can’t compete with virtual environments.

Hidden Harvest, a hidden gem! By Chantal Boudreau, member of the Environment Committee Fall is just around the corner and that means harvest season is here for several fruit trees! Elderberry cluster, harvested here in Orléans! Over the Summer, I became a Neighbourhood Leader with Hidden Harvest (more on them below!). I’d participated in harvests with them before and enjoyed how accessible they were. There's no experience required, all specialized equipment is provided, and there's something everyone can help with, such as picking or sorting.

Hidden Harvest, now a part of EnviroCentre, has been working since 2012 to ensure more of this food gets into the hands of the community.

Great turnout at today’s Kidical Mass ride in Orleans, Ottawa. Shows there’s an appetite for cycling outside the core.

City Councillors : Make sure to vote in favour of changes that will make our streets safer for everyone! Such as banning right turns on reds, narrowing our roads, implementing traffic calming measures, put in more protected bike lanes, lowering speed limits, etc...
