Je suis fier du travail accompli pour sauver le programme d'arts et d'industrie musicale du Collège Algonquin, dont les diplômés contribuent à la richesse et à la vitalité de notre ville.

J'ai travaillé en étroite collaboration avec l'industrie musicale pour bâtir des bases solides en faveur de la musique à Ottawa, notamment grâce au financement municipal accordé à OMIC pour sa création et sa pérennité.

I worked hard with the industry to create a strong foundation in support of music in Ottawa, including with City funding to OMIC to establish and sustain it. I am proud of the work they're doing to save the Music Industry Arts program at Algonquin, the graduates of which enrich and enliven our city.

There is so much momentum in Ottawa, aimed at ending homelessness. It was great to stay the day at a breakfast organized by @ottawaalliance.bsky.social and the United Way, featuring experts from Niagara Region + Calgary, who have transformed their shelter systems and housed thousands of people.

My colleague @arieltroster.com lands an excellent point: a small % of the city’s homeless have such complex, acute needs, but with so little supportive housing, they turn to the shelter system, which is not designed for those needs: it drains shelter resources, and doesn’t help those people. 1/

If we built the kind of city students are asking us to build, this would be a better city. Thanks to the Algonquin SA and Cllr. Johnson for organizing tonight’s student town hall with me and Cllrs. Gower and Tierney.

Yesterday on the way home from a long city council meeting, I saw that my bus wasn’t going to come for 40(!) min, so I walked. Not everyone has that option.

I believe that you deserve compensation for being left out in the cold. And we need every option on the table to get OC Transpo moving again.

Le zonage est essentiel à la construction d'une ville abordable, et je suis fier que le Conseil ait franchi une étape importante avec son nouveau règlement de zonage visant à mettre fin aux pratiques d'exclusion.

Le campus est entouré d'une zone qui, historiquement, limitait le logement aux maisons individuelles. Le nouveau zonage permettra la construction de logements intermédiaires plus accessibles aux étudiants.

Pour commencer, nous pourrions créer un zonage permettant la construction d'immeubles résidentiels à proximité. J'ai rapidement jeté un coup d'œil au zonage autour d'Algonquin (en bleu).

Pourquoi le nouveau zonage est-il important ? Ce soir, je participerai à une table ronde à Algonquin où les étudiants voudront savoir ce que la Ville peut faire pour rendre le logement plus abordable.

Zoning is a key part of building an affordable city, and I'm proud that Council has taken a big step with its new zoning by-law to end zoning that excludes people. There's more to be done, particularly on transit, but the zoning is a major achievement.

I've taken a quick look at the zoning around Algonquin (in blue). The campus is surrounded by zoning that has historically restricted housing to single-detached homes. The new zoning will enable missing middle housing that's more attainable for students.

Why is the new zoning important? Tonight I'll be taking part in a panel discussion at Algonquin at which students will want to know what the City can do to make housing more affordable. As a start, we can zone to allow multi-residential housing to be built nearby.

J'utilise quotidiennement les compétences acquises au programme de journalisme d'Algonquin. Ses diplômés jouent un rôle essentiel dans le développement de notre ville – sa vie civique, culturelle et économique. On peut dire sans exagérer que ce programme a changé ma vie.

New zoning bylaw that could reshape city passes unanimously at council | CBC News Ottawa city council passed a sweeping overhaul of zoning rules on Wednesday, capping off a years-long process that’s supposed to make it easier to build housing in the city.

Ottawa, Canada’s capital & 4th largest city (1.1 m residents) just passed a substantial zoning reform that:
—Allows 4-unit buildings on lots citywide
—Increases allowed heights to 6 or 9 stories (& up to 30) on major transit corridors
—Eliminates most parking requirements
—Allows home based retail
