What the hell did I just see. Real time shock. Now understand your original post. Iβm going to take a while to process. That planet at the end. It was. Wasnβt it?

12.07.2025 18:58 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This then is the Lido lane lesson.
Judge the people not the lane.
Look for consistency and swim in that one. Change lanes often to maintain consistency and donβt worry about the locals. Youβll never crack their code anyway.
This has two effects.
1. It drives the regulars apoplectic - for breast stroke can never be βvery fastβ.
2. It empties all the thrashers out of βfastβ into βvery fastβ leaving the lane empty but for people that actually swim at a reasonably consistent speed.
Finally point. From a human psychology perspective no-one wants to be βmediumβ. So βfastβ is chock full of dawdling scullers and thrashing imbeciles.
My personal approach is to go VERY early to avoid thrashers and be chaotic good by doing breast stroke in the βVERY fastβ lane. Yes! You heard me.
This results in two things.
1. Lane speeds are a shit show.
2. The regulars are constantly annoyed about everything all the time and express this in the time honoured British fashion of side eyes, passive aggression and tutting.
Next - dad bod Olympian (ALWAYS a man) He crawls ferociously for one length, barging & kicking past people for one length. Realising he canβt keep it up but has to save face on length two and keeps going. This he does (just about) by slowing to βmediumβ to avoid an embolism.
29.06.2025 21:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Problem three. Agents of lane speed chaos.
Iβll give you two extremes. First the βslowβ woman ( and, sorry but yes - itβs always a woman ), hair above water, wearing shades, going VERY slowly in the βmediumβ lane. She remains absolutely oblivious to everyone else sculling past her.
There is a cohort of Lido user that believe that THEY are in possession of lane speed βtruthβ. They alone have the secret. For them, lane speeds are not relative. They are absolute.
They themselves are a physical embodiment of lane speed. A universal constant of lido lore.
Fundamentally the lane ratings are based on relative terms. What is βfastβ? What is βveryβ fast? What is slow or medium? Itβs all relative.
Thatβs problem one.
Problem two. People.
Pool lanes. A rant. There is an undercurrent of lane politics at the lido that is worthy of a phd. As I have nothing better to do ( other than pour another rose ) let me try and outline the features of this this⦠minefield for BlueSky
29.06.2025 21:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Pool cliques, etiquette, entitlement and unwritten rules are a total nightmare. Doubly so for lidos.
