Do tortured pop culture analogies on podcasts count for nothing?

Design agency owner here that’s babysat Β£3k+ inkjets overnight on many deadlines. Ignore unicorn inkjet fairytales. I don’t care if their eco tanks lasted β€˜me a 100 years with no problem’. Buy an office laser. Probably the Verge recommendation. HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw worth a look.

😠 Unsubbed in infantile Dorian protest
πŸ₯° Resubbed after hearing Musk call for violent overthrow of UK gov and realised chipping in the price of a Shoreditch coffee to a bunch of progressive voices is literally the least I can do to forward our shared values

What the hell did I just see. Real time shock. Now understand your original post. I’m going to take a while to process. That planet at the end. It was. Wasn’t it?

I went on a journey from disappointment to despair over 45 minutes until I realised I was watching the 2024 event by mistake. True story.

You will be greatly missed Dorian. Remaniacs got me through some dark times - thank you. OGWN is the ship of Theseus of podcasts at this point. I hope it’s got another golden age in its future (but without needing the catastrophic politics please)

If The Met was taken over by the government, troops deployed to London streets and the assumption that this would be rolled out across the country… I’m not sure we’d shrug and carry on with business as usual. Just me?

I don’t understand why people review their media app with a review of the last media they consumed on the app.

This then is the Lido lane lesson.

Judge the people not the lane.

Look for consistency and swim in that one. Change lanes often to maintain consistency and don’t worry about the locals. You’ll never crack their code anyway.

This has two effects.

1. It drives the regulars apoplectic - for breast stroke can never be β€˜very fast’.

2. It empties all the thrashers out of β€˜fast’ into β€˜very fast’ leaving the lane empty but for people that actually swim at a reasonably consistent speed.

29.06.2025 21:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Finally point. From a human psychology perspective no-one wants to be β€˜medium’. So β€˜fast’ is chock full of dawdling scullers and thrashing imbeciles.

My personal approach is to go VERY early to avoid thrashers and be chaotic good by doing breast stroke in the β€˜VERY fast’ lane. Yes! You heard me.

29.06.2025 21:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This results in two things.

1. Lane speeds are a shit show.

2. The regulars are constantly annoyed about everything all the time and express this in the time honoured British fashion of side eyes, passive aggression and tutting.

29.06.2025 21:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Next - dad bod Olympian (ALWAYS a man) He crawls ferociously for one length, barging & kicking past people for one length. Realising he can’t keep it up but has to save face on length two and keeps going. This he does (just about) by slowing to β€˜medium’ to avoid an embolism.

29.06.2025 21:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Problem three. Agents of lane speed chaos.

I’ll give you two extremes. First the β€˜slow’ woman ( and, sorry but yes - it’s always a woman ), hair above water, wearing shades, going VERY slowly in the β€˜medium’ lane. She remains absolutely oblivious to everyone else sculling past her.

29.06.2025 21:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

There is a cohort of Lido user that believe that THEY are in possession of lane speed β€˜truth’. They alone have the secret. For them, lane speeds are not relative. They are absolute.

They themselves are a physical embodiment of lane speed. A universal constant of lido lore.

29.06.2025 21:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Fundamentally the lane ratings are based on relative terms. What is β€˜fast’? What is β€˜very’ fast? What is slow or medium? It’s all relative.

That’s problem one.

Problem two. People.

Pool lanes. A rant. There is an undercurrent of lane politics at the lido that is worthy of a phd. As I have nothing better to do ( other than pour another rose ) let me try and outline the features of this this… minefield for BlueSky

29.06.2025 21:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Pool cliques, etiquette, entitlement and unwritten rules are a total nightmare. Doubly so for lidos.

Swarms of tiny nose robots could clear infected sinuses, researchers say Chinese and Hong Kong scientists succeed in animal trials, but potential problems include risk of devices being left in body and public suspicions

What - and I say this with absolute sincerity - what, the ACTUAL FUCK!! Has no one ever read or seen or even heard of any dystopian sci-fi? Tiny nose robots?? No. Just no.
