The reason we have a liveable planet is because of nature systems smothering the land - grassland, peatland, wetland, woodland - we cannot mitigate and offset against its entire destruction. At some point whatβs left of this fragile, precious network of life will collapse. We are seeing it already.

Petition: Ban driven grouse shooting
Chris Packham, Ruth Tingay and Mark Avery (Wild Justice) believe that driven grouse shooting is bad for people, the environment and wildlife. People; we think grouse shooting is economically insignifi...
The @wildjustice.bsky.social petition to ban driven grouse shooting has passed 97,000 signatures thanks to you. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...
Even I am fairly confident that we'll get 100,000 signatures, triggering a Westminster parliament debate, by 22 May. 22 April would be even better!

Great news for England. Meanwhile in Wales farmers and gamekeepers destroy wildlife and habitat with wild abandon. Not just through burning. In the last few weeks the fire service has been called out across Wales to tackle out of control upland fires.

The devastating reality of disability benefit cuts
The government must face the consequences of taking support from the poorest, and try to find a better way
Single disabled people are already four times more likely to be falling behind on their bills, six times more likely to go cold and nine times more likely to skip meals. Cuts will make things worse

My submission to the Governmentβs Land Use consultation
This post is by Guy Shrubsole. This is my submission to the Governmentβs Land Use consultation, which was launched by the Environment Secretary Steve Reed on 31st January 2025 and closes on 2β¦
Iβve published my submission to the governmentβs Land Use consultation.
DEFRA has proposed lots of bold and interesting ideas, many of which I support.
But they also underestimate the scale of land use change needed to restore nature & fix water pollution. 1/π§΅

Brilliant submission by Guy here. It's essential that everyone who wants to see richer ecosystems in England also contributes to this consultation, however briefly, as many vested interests will defend the status quo. It's the first time in my life that we've had this chance. Let's not waste it.

Dear chancellor. You cannot have infinite growth in a finite system. And no growth on a dead planet. And βtrickle down economicsβ has been proven to be a myth. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. All of this is a matter of fact not opinion.

Water companies in England βuse greenwashing playbook to hide environmental harmβ
Researchers say companies have prolonged injustice and exaggerated cost of solving infrastructure problems
Important new research out today concludes that English βwater companies are adopting disinformation tactics similar to those used by the fossil fuel and tobacco industries with the widespread use of greenwashing to downplay the environmental harm they causeβ. π

You know why itβs so much money per a bat? Because there are so few of them, because theyβre rare (in the UK, and therefore very vulnerable, declining elsewhere too). Thatβs why you have to shell out loads of money on mitigation if youβre going to plough through their habitat.

1. The UK governmentβs pursuit of GDP growth at all costs is an assault on our natural wealth, which will impoverish us all. It might be able to massage the headline figures by converting the living world into money, but it does not improve our lives.π§΅

Figure showing growth in global GHG emissions from agriculture between 1990 (~5 Gt CO2e) and 2020 (~6 Gt CO2e).
~4 Gt CO2e of the emissions are from livestock production (enteric fermentation, manure management, manure applied to soils, manure left on pasture). The other ~2 Gt CO2e are from rice cultivation, synthetic fertilizers, crop residues, crop residue burning, and savanna fires.

Crop emissions are blue
We're going to need to reduce emissions from food systems
