🍩 How do you figure out if you are inside the doughnut? 🍩

In a new paper with @jonaskromand.bsky.social and Anders BjΓΈrn, we try to answer that question. We suggest allocating carrying capacity to ensure the fulfilment of human needs.

Here’s a quick roundup of highlights from research we published in 2024, on unequal exchange, ecosocialism, and post-capitalist transformation.

As always, free PDFs are available via the link at the end of the thread. 🧡

An infographic entitled 'Household CO2e emissions in 2019 per income group (within United States and across countries)'. The graphic uses different-sized bubbles to show household carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions between across countries groups (low-income, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high-income), and also within the United States (bottom 10%, 90-99%, 99.9%, and super-rich & billionaires). Emissions values shown range from a tiny bubble representing 1.6 tonnes of CO2e per household in low-income countries to a huge bubble extending beyond the chart area representing nearly 3,500 tonnes per household among US-based super-rich & billionaires. Image by @AndrewLFanning using data from Starr et al. (2023).

You need to see shocking extent of carbon inequality around the world.

A remarkable study led by Jared Starr finds that super-rich US households emit *2000 TIMES* more CO2e than average low-income country households.

How the f*ck is that even possible? The disparity never ceases to enrage me.

Exploring the Risks of Overshoot: New Research Highlights Critical Challenges for Climate Strategies As global warming approaches 1.5Β°C and the urgency to address climate change grows, ambitious strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions become more important than ever. One increasingly discussed approach is the concept of "overshoot," where temperatures exceed a target temporarily before returning to back below it later on. But what are the risks of overshoot, and are we underestimating its long-term consequences?

Did you know even a temporary overshoot of 1.5Β°C could trigger irreversible tipping points? 🌍 Risks include permafrost thaw, coral reef collapse, and more. More about the risks of overshoot πŸ‘‰ bit.ly/4g5mASr

A person on a bicycle is by far the most energy-efficient among animals and machines per distance traveled relative to body weight. The bicycle is magic.

How much more evidence do we need, after 29 failures, that the climate COPs are not fit for purpose? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
There have been many proposals for a process that would actually work, but all are ignored.
The talks are MEANT to fail.

a chart showing fossil fuel company projections way more optimsitic than real ccs dpeloyment

This is why it is such a bad thing that so many future visions of climate action rely *very* very heavily on CCS; many times bigger than what that study optimistically says is feasible or possible.

Eg: here's my compilation of fossil company scenario assumptions:

The overshoot myth: you can’t keep burning fossil fuels and expect scientists of the future to get us back to 1.5Β°C The net zero approach of the Paris agreement has become detached from reality as it increasingly relies on science fiction levels of speculative technology.
