I think you're right. "A resurgent nationalism, concerns about competitiveness and security, and regional conflicts push countries to increasingly focus on domestic or, at most, regional issues. "
That's the recipe for 4 degrees C of warming. Unrelenting emissions.

Trump Cracks Down on Bird Deaths, but Only From Wind Turbines
Make no mistake:
"wind turbines cause significantly fewer bird deaths than buildings, cats or oil pits. The Audubon Society says that climate change poses a bigger threat to birds than wind power."

Illustration showing the climate feedback loop caused by fires. It begins with increased carbon emissions fueling climate change, leading to hotter, drier conditions. These conditions dry out forests, making them more prone to fires. As fires become more frequent and intense, larger areas burn, releasing more carbon emissions, which further fuels climate change.
The Republican Party in America as well as Canada's supposed "Conservatives" marched in lockstep with the world's oil companies in denying the science of human-caused #ClimateChange & slow-walking if not outright outlawing the solutions, profiting mightily the whole time.

I completely agree, and have also been saying it for years. In the US, Democrats even in blue states are ok with supporting renewables, but won't address fossil fuel incumbents.
That's the interesting politics...and the necessary politics. The Earth needs that strategy to be developed and taken up

4.6 Billion Years On, the Sun Is Having a Moment
In the past two years, without much notice, solar power has begun to truly transform the worldβs energy system.
The only group that came even remotely close to getting the growth of solar right back in 2009 was not the IEA or J. P. Morgan Chase or Dow Jones or BlackRock. It was Greenpeace. And even they were way too pessimistic.
