Why Are Some Democrats Backing MAGA's Anti-LGBTQ+ Censorship? From late-night host cancellations to removing LGBTQ+ history from government sites, politicians in both parties are contributing to the overwriting of the internet โ€” a place where lots of queer and t...

Just heard disappointing news that @warren.senate.gov will co-sponsor the Kids Online Safety Act again despite overwhelming opposition from LGBTQ, human rights, abortion rights, and racial justice groups.

This is a horrific betrayal of her constituents, particularly trans youth and their families.

The fact that students need different things is why this is a hard problem and why we need double (at least) the number of teachers to provide the kind of bespoke education you seem to be asking for.

Back from my argument in the Supreme Court defending the campaign finance laws from GOP attack. A big thank you to the @eliaslawgroup.bsky.social team that helped prepare me and our amazing clients @democrats.org, @dscc.bsky.social, and @electdemocrats.bsky.social.

Onto the next battle!

For a lot of reasons, but not the least of which is that such experiences need to be highly tailored to the specific students in a classroom and also to the cultural zeitgeist which rotates on an annual basis.

I don't like to blame teachers, who are among the most underpaid and overworked professionals in the US. Teaching is hard, and homework is a way to train skills, even though it's not fun for the students. It is very hard to make every lesson a magical and enthralling experience. >

This is true but there's also a difference between playtime creativity in 5 year olds and "let's build a new kind of suspension bridge that actually works better" creativity. You really need expertise for the latter.

The executives all champing at the bit to roll this stuff out really have no idea what they're in for

Not everything a student does/experiences should be about creativity. Creativity is only one part of human cognition and it typically comes after mastery of the other stuff.

Is going to the gym to work on your cardio useless because it's repetitive and could be replicated by a machine?

I've loved Sigourney Weaver ever since one of my all-time favorite movies, ALIEN. Couldn't resist going all fanboy on her yesterday & asking for a photo. She told me she's now in the cast of The Mandalorian. Talk about bad timing: she's now in that galaxy far, far away, years after I checked out! ๐Ÿ’”

And even business emails have always mattered in the past, because they were part of the way that humans paid attention to a problem. The mere act of writing them forces engagement with an issue, even if the specific text is mundane.

I'm surprised to hear you say this. Just because homework can be replicated with a machine doesn't mean it doesn't matter. Learning and training, whether in the gym or classroom often has us repeating rote tasks just to get better at something. Writing is no different.

At 30 seconds it creates a present out of thin air on the left side of the christmas tree. AI videos are so bad that this is deemed as worth rolling out by a multi billion dollar corporation.

Of the many sins committed by grad school recommendation portals, the worst one has to be asking for a letter and then also asking for written comments in a web form. What are we even doing at that point?

09.12.2025 04:54 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 11    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This exactly. Some people enjoy a work life that is all consuming and that's fine. For some people it becomes a black hole of problematic behavior, but that can also happen with hobbies and family life.

I there's a difference between jobs that are just jobs and jobs that are passions. Academia can be either for you. Just know which version you're using and don't be surprised at the result.

Definitely lots of compelling correlates, but finding activations in e.g. motor areas doesn't mean the computations are entirely motor. Multiple things can be true.

But I also agree that the case for amodal anything is theoretical rather than empirical

Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?

For a sufficiently broad definition of what motor or action means, I agree, but my version might be more abstract than you're comfortable. There's a substantial literature on whether we have amodal concepts which are hard to map onto some definitions of motor.

07.12.2025 03:40 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yes I think of motor as specifically planning how the body will move in the world. If one expands the definition of motor to mean essentially actions in a more general sense it is hard to disagree but is that even falsifiable?

07.12.2025 03:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Sure, if one is actually imagining hand movements. But do you think that chess grandmasters think through a move sequence by imagining hand movements?

07.12.2025 01:55 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I must have misinterpreted but you said all long term planning is motor planning. That seems to suggest that you'd plan chess as specific motor plans, no?

So much learning happening!

07.12.2025 01:32 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I can't really endorse that because I think it's more efficient to plan in motor free spaces in some cases. e.g. when playing chess, I really doubt that intentions of moving the fingers to the pieces is the primary method of planning/thought.

One thing that makes me extra angry about AI actors is that for every actor whose face you recognize thereโ€™s a hundred actors scraping by who would also do a great job at it, actors are an almost endless cultural resource in America itโ€™s like solar power
