Is there a name for this kind of shortening? I feel like it used to be uncommon in English, but is becoming more common lately. Ones that I’ve seen used recently include secdef and opsec.

Isn’t it written in katakana just because it’s a plant product? That is typical for the names of fruit and so forth that derive from Chinese.
