Despite promising #renewables potential, electrification is hampered by high operational cost burden, weak financing conditions & low-decarbonised grids. Fiscal capacity is middling.
#Czechia #Latvia #Poland #Romania and #Slovakia face the highest barriers.
These areas suffer from the worst financing conditions, the least decarbonised grids, the lowest industrial electrification rates. Fiscal conditions limit governments’ ability to support industry.
Our new research shows the barriers to unlocking financial flows are multi-level and vary vastly from one region to another.
Our method clusters EU regions on a spectrum of ‘electrification-readiness’. We identified 5 distinct regional profiles ranging from Very Low Barriers to Very High Barriers.
But funding is still flowing into #FossilFuels and fossil-based production. Electrification technologies face underinvestment, particularly in regions with weaker investment conditions.
We urgently need solutions to scale-up electrification of industry in the EU 🔌
Specifically Europe needs to electrify its industries 🏭🏭
Industry accounts for ¼ of Europe’s final energy consumption
Europe’s #EnergySecurity remains dangerously exposed to global political uncertainty and market volatility.
For our economy, our climate and for consumers, the sooner Europe can reduce its dependence on imported #energy the better.
For this, #Electrification is key 🔑
