So it’s definitely time to start looking at international PhD programs, right?

Because as a perspective, PhD student seeing so many admission cycles getting canceled due to funding, I don’t have a lot of confidence in the US

Like I said I’m still in the super early stages of this (second semester of grad school) but I’m writing down every interesting idea and working on reading as much new research as I can in this space

Idk exactly what I want to study yet but I know i want to do work like this. To dig into transportation/climate/equity spatial analysis with the goal of materially improving the lives and experiences of commuters and communities

A few months ago I went to a presentation of PhD research that focused on urban heat exposure on the London tube with the end goal of identifying which lines are too priority for air conditioning by tfl and I swear this topic required my brain

Cities feel alive when streets belong to people, not cars. Clean air, lively spaces, and real community vibes are the way forward.

Me going to sleep at 4am last night

And it’s 2am now 😭

Reading about evolution of the LA Port and how the city attorneys office blocked investigation into health issues caused by port air pollution for 7 years for fear of litigation against the city

So many people ended up with asthma or cancer and a host of other issues bc of that

Also I need a crash course on all the Kennedys cause why are there so many and all of them in politics?!??

Might even make a new account and only follow French language posters!

Could be a good way to learn less formal language

I guess my goal would be to get to a conversational level, over time of course

But I’m gonna vet pulling out the old books, brushing up on vocab and grammar, then trying to read a couple books, and find a group or something to practice with

I’m not sure I’m making any concrete “resolutions” this year, but I’m continuing to build out the life I want and I’m starting to think that includes learning French!

I studied for years in school and it took me a long time to love it, but I do, and I don’t want what little I did learn to fade

So I’m reading this book and there are so many things I didn’t know about LA history I’m SHOCKED

In my defense, presidential stuff has always felt like “white peoples history” but still

The next chapter is on transportation and starts with the funding of LA Metro and I’m only 10 pages away!! Gonna read it tomorrow

Ok so as an LA native who doesn’t know a ton about its municipal history, I’ve been reading The Making of Modern Los Angeles by Nick Patsaouras and the second chapter is a crash course in all the major events of the 20th/21st centuries 🤯

Cannot recommend enough

Especially since I’m not a strong cyclist since the last time I was on a bike regularly was middle school or so and then citybikes in SF a few times a year

I need to build confidence and maybe map about first before I brave the streets here

I really should bike more, and I’d love an electric bike, but I also don’t wanna die on these LA streets

I’m scared 😖

I’m 5k short on tuition so might have to withdraw from classes for spring semester 😣

Extreme stress but will ignore it momentarily to “enjoy” the Holidays and my birthday

During the holidays I’m especially jealous of people in cities with bette transit because driving 50 blocks south to eat dinner should not involve bumper to bumper traffic and intense honking

I miss London/SF so much sometimes. The ease of just getting on the bus and going

Mine is James Joyce’s Dubliners!

I just bout it again to reread since the plot is a bit fuzzy now but I thought about it for years afterward
