it is a beautiful day in the wood. i walk through sun-dappled rows and feel a peaceful disconnect from work and the hustle and bustle of the city. suddenly i hear it: the familiar sound of birdsong, and a slow realization dawns as i hear the full tune: some bird just fucking smiledogged me

24.07.2025 00:55 — 👍 12 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0if you're a UK citizen and want the #smallweb and #indieweb to continue to thrive, please consider signing this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/72...
the chilling effect this act has on the web as a whole cannot be understated
bsky has grown quite large now, so they have the resources to implement this; however, most sites do not, and quite a few small sites have already either geoblocked the UK or shut down entirely in response to this act
unfortunately, geoblocking the UK on my own sites is under consideration as well
this also applies to any site owner outside of the UK, as long as their site is accessible inside the UK in any way; VPNs/proxies and tor/i2p won't help legally
the age verification recently added on bsky.app is a consequence of this, as bsky is a US-owned/operated service
the processes required for sites to be compliant are expensive and time-consuming, and doing so "correctly" is even more so; that's just for the documentation, with other parts costing even more
the penalties are also expensive; we're talking £18 million *minimum* if found to be violating them
the UK's online safety act enforces heavy and unrealistic requirements for anyone running a website that people can communicate on, including those run outside the UK
do you think the web was better when smaller hobbyist forums were more widespread? well, **this act effectively kills them all**
why do they always feel the need to stick Urban Champion in everything NES related
