Also I'm pretty sure the computer tracks everyone at all times. They ask it to locate people all the time. Or at least they do on the Enterprise; maybe not on DS9? I'm not as well versed.

I mean, they can also be interrupted at any moment 24/7 by a voice text from their boss. What privacy? 😅

I'd love to be able to replicate some of the scaffolding. Like, start my kid off with very basic word processing, drawing, simple games. Then some limited web access. And then opening up as they get older. And having conversations along the way of course, the heart of all parenting

Yeah I suppose you could say this. I grew up along with the internet, and in a way that means it was scaffolded for me. Started with a DOS computer with just typing and some games, then got a computer with a word processor, then the Internet in the late 90s which was still nascent

None of this is perfect, and would definitely mean controlling parents could cut kids off from information, but that's true now. No tool is going to make up for bad parenting, but putting accessible tools in parents hands would help the ones who are trying but are feeling overwhelmed

Oh also! Rather than making adults share personal info to verify ages, how about the option to report that children under 18 are using the device. Then the computer operates in kid or teen mode and can only be overridden by a parental password.

We're pretty permissive with screen time but have deleted YouTube from all child accessible devices because the algorithm is garbage, but that sucks bc there is a lot of great content there. Since I don't have time to sit and watch everything w my kids, I just block it.

The biggest thing would be simply tools that require opting in rather than opting out or blocking. Like, kids YouTube, for example, should not have an algorithm at all -- it should literally be custom playlists of only videos or maybe channels that you authorize

So, my kids are 7 and under, so for that age, simple tech that can be scaffolded as kids get older. Like, a tablet (or even better, a computer) that is literally blank until parents add something. A children's browser that starts with a small whitelist you choose. Truly intuitive parental controls.

Yeah as a parent to young kids I have a lot of ideas about what would make it easier to guide my kids online but 1) no one's asking and 2) age verification, at least in the manner governments are enacting it, is nowhere on the list
