I 💯 agree, that campaign arc is now about is that PC's corruption

I guarantee you that 5e being the defacto choice and having such inherent complexity it has driven more players away from the hobby then it has brought in because those people assume that just how TTRPGs are.

Your TTRPG setting should have some superstitions. Magic being real would make people more likely to believe outlandish things, not less. Watching your shadow on the night of a new moon attracts doppelgangers. Healing magic borrows health from the future. Go nuts.

If you, regular person, did anything like this after a fatal car accident, you would be prosecuted for a variety of crimes, including insurance fraud.

If you then repeatedly lied to the courts about it, like Tesla did, you'd get prosecuted for that too, plus stiff monetary sanctions.

There is no gaming medium as uniquely human as TTRPGs. No other gaming medium allows (and requires) people to bring so much of themselves and their experiences to the table for play.

The nuances of Apocalypse World’s MC prep tools didn’t really make their way into most PBTA games, so using them almost verbatim for Scroll & Steel’s playtesting has been an eye-opening experience.
