One of the most depressing and incredible things about this film is the ways that it so easily tied into my knowledge of afro-pessimism and Black social death. Da'Shaun Harrison, a Black southerner, trans theorist and author of Belly of the Beast: The Politics of Anti-Fatness as Anti-Blackness, wrote a piece that has stuck with me since the minute l read it, where they outline living as Black person as a sort of undeath, a life lived as dead. Da' Shaun describes this unique position citing, "to live in the world as Dead is to breathe life into a world that seeks to dispose of you. it means that whiteness, whereby i am naming antiblackness, constructs Blackidentity through the criminalization, subjugation, and objectification of our flesh and our being; forcing us to live as fugitives because we have no home."
