Small brass butterfly.

The underside of the butterfly, which has little pockets to store sewing needle packets. The underside of the wings are decorated with two plates. One carries an inscription of the drapers company: "Copestake, Moore, Crampton & Co. - London." The other has a gilded head of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, art, trade, and war.

The butterfly can be folded up, like how a butterfly flaps its wings.

Beautiful 1860s Victorian butterfly, which was used to store small packets of sewing needles on the underside of the wings. This was a collaboration between a London-based drapers company and a sewing needle manufacturer. On exhibit at Tatter Blue, a Brooklyn textile museum.

This is so saturated in the culture that parents will straight up apologize to me for needing to bring their kids along, or they'll say they can't come to an event I'm hosting because they'd have to bring their kid. I'm so stunned by this. Bring your kid; let me meet them! Let's include them!

100%!! i have blessedly never really struggled with perfectionism (i’m a ‘good enough’ type of guy) but i find so much more joy + self expression in my silly messy abstract drawings than i ever did in realism. i still draw refined stuff from time to time but at the end of the day my art is for me :)

i went full circle, learned to draw ‘Good’ in the way that people go wow that’s a good drawing and then decided drawing ‘Bad’ (naïve, loose, scribbly,) was more fun and now i just do that.
it makes some people weirdly mad at me

“doing hard things is good for you” has somehow become a hot take in our increasingly convenience-obsessed world and that’s pretty depressing

learning things isn’t supposed to be immediately effortless. the effort is the point.

i was always told i was “naturally gifted” with drawing as a kid and it frustrated me, because i spent every free moment of my time drawing.
that wasn’t an inherent natural ability, it was an inherent interest that lead me to develop skill through thousands of hours of practice.
