Even when I was at my most debilitated in the hospital, I knew how lucky I was compared to the millions of people behind bars. I knew that, despite the early ravages of and outrage about the pandemic behind bars, prevention measures were short-lived. Prison abolitionist Mariame Kaba has long called prisons β€œdeath-making institutions.” Now, the rise in incarceration (and a skyrocketing of immigrant detention), coupled with the nation’s lax approach to Covid-19 and health care behind bars, makes her characterization (yet again) a frighteningly accurate prophecy.

The right weaponizes Dr. King's legacy against social justice organizing.

Counter that misrepresentation with King's longstanding, radical critiques of Northern racism.

12 Things You May Not Know About Rosa Parks Parks spent her life β€œrebelling against second-class citizenship.”

If you’re looking for a source of inspiration in our No Kings era, look to Rosa Parks. She saw young people as the key to carrying the Civil Rights movement forward. 20 years ago, she became an ancestor. #RestInPower @jeannetheoharis.bsky.social

Oct. 8, 1965: Enforcement of Civil Rights Act Curtailed in Chicago Schools Federal funds were quickly restored to Chicago public schools after they were withheld for continued segregation in schools, effectively curtailing enforcement of the Civil Rights Act in Chicago.

#tdih 1965 U.S. president halted enforcement of Civil Rights Act in Chicago. Fed funds restored to Chicago BoE after Daley confronted LBJ. They'd been withheld for racist school segregation. Democrats exempted the North.

Appalling, appalling video. I genuinely think the NYPD should investigate for assault. There was no call at all for level of violence. She perhaps brushed him with her hands but she was not posing a threat at all.

@jamellebouie.net, that's true. Yet, most books on MLK Southernize him & miss whole swaths of his politics. They hew to the white media story that he discovers the North after Watts β€”which is simply not true. That's why I spent years writing this. There's a lot that we don't understand about King.

According to WaPo’s termination letter my post referencing Kirk’s views on Black women was not even brought up.

The Post’s stated reasons are *worse*.

A white man killed another white man, but Black people are catching death threats.
