An image of a rock in thin section, displaying crystals of various minerals (kyanite, sillimanite, muscovite, chlorite, plagioclase). A schistose texture is observed, with the muscovite being aligned and appearing to 'flow' from top right to bottom left of the image.
A nice schist with muscovite, kyanite/sillimanite, chlorite, and twinned plagioclase.

A serpentinite mesh texture for #ThinsectionThursday. Or is it a piece of modern art? ๐๏ธ
Note how there are several generations of serpentine, among them a clear one that filled the first fractures, and a dark one (full of magnetite) that replaced the rest of the olivine.

Just one of the best thin section images you're likely to see. Brightly coloured fresh olivines in blues, yellows, and oranges among smaller black, white and grey plagioclases, which generally define a fabric from left to right.
The isle of Rรนm and its layered intrusion remain undefeated for thin sections. Foliated troctolite (ol+plag) or 'allivalite' from Hallival, in the NMS rock collection. #ThinSectionThursday

I do it the old fashioned way with a mechanical stage and some panoramic image stitching software. Usually around 40-60 overlapping images per sample to cover a whole thin section - can get about 3 done (in PPL and XPL) per hour so not too bad.

A photograph of an old glass microscope slide on a white background. The pale round rock section is covered by a glass coverslip with yellow resin round the edges. A green handwritten label at the top says "No. 69 Forellenstein Volpersdorf, Schlesien". A tan coloured label at the bottom says "Krantz 1893, 24, 369".
The rock slide from the previous image zoomed in slightly and between crossed polars. It shows black, grey, and pale yellow striped plagioclase and purple and orange olivine.
A nineteenth century Krantz thin section of 'forellenstein' (literally "trout-stone"), an old German name for troctolite โ an ultramafic olivine+plagioclase rock. From the NMS thin section collection. #ThinSectionThursday

A rock thin section showing a contact between coarse syenite and medium grained, prophyritic syenite.
I used to do this somewhere else: a nice contact between coarse agpaitic syenite and finer grained metaluminous syenite.
The latter includes a mixed mineral assemblage with forsterite and diopside derived from mixing with hawaiitic magmas.
