It’s made to be read by groups of people! That’s why it’s so long: literacy at the time was practiced by reading out loud. It’s not a novel; it’s more like a TV show. It’s made for episodic reading by the family after dinner.

This is also why Charles Dickens is so frustrating to read as a novel sometimes: he’s writing in monthly newspaper episodes basically. Paid by the word! Different literary needs impacting the structures of stories is fun to think about.

Honestly the more I learn about the "history" of the novel in Europe, the more those 19th century English women writing complete modern novels with tight structures and themes impress me. It's a new technology. They're inventing it. I don't care about most of the stories, but wow: the achievement.

to do so. it's meant to refer to like... nurses who see ppl in poverty unable to afford care. it was never supposed to mean "you can't feel compassion anymore bc you're tired boohoo." it's meant to give a term for ppl who experience clinical anhedonia as a result of their occupations.
