08.02.2026 04:29 โ ๐ 5677 ๐ 1281 ๐ฌ 34 ๐ 24Just a quick update from the Twin Cities. (Please forgive the unsolicited message). THINGS ARE NOT BETTER IN MINNEAPOLIS. The media is mostly moving on, Trump is focused on other stuff, BUT NOTHING HAS CHANGED ON THE GROUND. More than 2,000 DHS thugs continue to roam the streets, abducting people 24/7, assaulting legal observers with impunity, and routinely denying 1st, 4th, and 5th amendment rights. Drones and helicopters are overhead every day. Hundreds and hundreds of terrified families have not left their homes since mid-December ... relying on the community to bring them food and help with rent and other necessities. (Those people are NOT violent drug cartel sex offending murderers, as DHS would tell you. Most are legal residents or citizens.) If anything, things have just become more stressful and intractable (think trench warfare as a suitable metaphor): The resistance is better organized and numerous, but DHS has become more clever and better at disguise... and the county sheriff's office is increasingly supporting them . Do not let anyone tell you that Homans (the new person in charge of the occupation) is making anything better. Do not let anyone tell you that 700 ICE agents leaving the city has made much of a difference; the remaining force (again, ~2,000) is still larger than the entire city's police force (which is legally unable to do anything). Please call your congressional reps ... especially if there is any chance the administration might listen to them.
A desperate plea sent to me by a Minneapolis resident who's been on the front lines since the beginning of the ICE occupation:

Once he was taken to an ICE holding facility at Ft. Snelling in suburban Minneapolis, Castaรฑeda Mondragรณn said officers resumed beating him. Recognizing that he was seriously hurt, he said, he pleaded with them to stop but they just โlaughed at me and hit me again.โ โThey were very racist people,โ he said. โNo one insulted them, neither me nor the other person they detained me with. It was their character, their racism toward us, for being immigrants.โ

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) โ Alberto Castaรฑeda Mondragรณn says his memory was so jumbled after a beating by immigration officers that he initially could not remember he had a daughter and still struggles to recall treasured moments like the night he taught her to dance. But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain. He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friendโs car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again. He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.
ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man โpurposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.โ
What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldnโt remember he had a daughter.
An 18-month-old baby held with her parents at a South Texas immigration detention center became so ill last month that she was rushed to a hospitalโ then sent back to detention days later, where she was denied medication doctors said she needed to survive.

And here's a secret of the past decade: a lot of the crucial organizing/resistance work is done by women who look like nice mom-type ladies, often suburban variety, sometimes through nice organizations like churches. Sorry if anyone needs it to look like Che Guevara.

07.02.2026 00:36 โ ๐ 995 ๐ 130 ๐ฌ 49 ๐ 5Post from Brett Egan, President, DeVos institute of arts and nonprofit management The claim the Center could be stripped to its steel beams and rebuilt for $257 million (the congressional allocation) is, unsurprisingly, entirely incoherent. The Centerโs interior is approx. 1.5M. square feet. This would allot approx. $157 PSF to not only demolish but rebuild and fit out a revitalized Center. Anyone in the business knows this is 1/10 (on the very cheap) to 1/20 (more of a world class standard) of what would be needed to build a performing arts center, not including demo and not including DC pricing and permitting. Foundation and steel is expensive but it is not 9/10 of costs, much less 19/20 of costs. For reference, the truly world class PAC NYC (Perelman at the World Trade Center) cost approx. $560M to build and is 129K sf, so over $4K psf to build. This was a very expensive project in a very expensive place but provides an acute sense of how unrealistic a $157 PSF "down to the studs and back" proposal is. This presents a few scenarios: 1. 47 is gaslighting on the โbeamsโ quip for kicks 2. 47 doesnโt have a plan, at all, and is spouting nonsense on the fly 3. 47 plans to demolish and not rebuild 4. Conjecture on the extent of the work is wildly overblown 5. 47 contemplates a largely unnecessary project that will cost the American people multiples of the current Congressional allocation
