Totally! I learned about the derived category of coherent sheaves from studying model categories before I knew about, like, conics and I must say I understand the joy now in a way I didn't appreciate before. It goes with a general theme that the abstract and the concrete really need eachother.

Yep - I actually did an independent study on category theory with undergrads who had never seen a topological space or a group before. It was fun but yeah I quickly realized the lack of examples was going to be a problem. Basically all I had was posets and graphs (they were mostly cs students).

Abstraction of a form of compression. Its purpose is to hide complexity so you can see the forest for the trees. But what if you are interested in the trees? What constitutes complexity is a matter of perspective: abstraction can obscure things too. Ideally you want as many perspectives as possible.
