I hear and see your concerns. Over the weekend, a couple users hosted on Blacksky's PDS were banned from the Bluesky app and thus the Bluesky API servers. This was a weakness of our system I've been aware of and hoped we had more time to address before any kind of public incident. 1/11

Who Goes Nazi?, by Dorothy Thompson

Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

A grocery shelf displaying tall white cans of Erewhon Naturally Alkaline Spring Water, each 16 fluid ounces (473 ml), labeled as β€œCanned at the Source – Shasta Springs.” The cans are decorated with black-and-white mountain illustrations. A digital price tag beneath them shows the product as β€œErewhon Water Spring Glacial Can 16z” with a retail price of $54.99, creating a striking mismatch between the ordinary bottled water and the extreme price.

Totally! I learned about the derived category of coherent sheaves from studying model categories before I knew about, like, conics and I must say I understand the joy now in a way I didn't appreciate before. It goes with a general theme that the abstract and the concrete really need eachother.

I studied algebraic topology in grad school but managed to never learn algebraic geometry. I know some of the abstract concepts but honestly the classical stuff is where it's at! Can't believe it took me this long

Learning about the Veronese embedding has brought me such visceral joy. If you picture the projective plane as a sphere (mod antipodal, whatever) then it embeds the sphere into a bigger space in a twisty way such that all curves of degree d become hyperplane slices through its twisty image! Yay

Yep - I actually did an independent study on category theory with undergrads who had never seen a topological space or a group before. It was fun but yeah I quickly realized the lack of examples was going to be a problem. Basically all I had was posets and graphs (they were mostly cs students).

Abstraction of a form of compression. Its purpose is to hide complexity so you can see the forest for the trees. But what if you are interested in the trees? What constitutes complexity is a matter of perspective: abstraction can obscure things too. Ideally you want as many perspectives as possible.

CHOTINER: You can turn into a wolf, right?
DRACULA: That’s right.
CHOTINER: Thank you.
