A majority of the 16 U.S. states under total Democratic control now ban 287(g) partnerships with ICE. Maryland and New Mexico just joined that list, following Maine in January.

Again, these things are going to be WILDLY expensive, but Congress gave them the money so that’s not a problem.

Yes, this is a very large part of it. ICE doesn’t want to hold people in detention for lengthy periods of time. That’s why ICE officers pressure people in detention to give up, sometimes every day, sometimes with threats.

Every person who fights keeps a bed full, not empty for the next arrestee.

As to how much it’ll cost, we know they plan to spend $38.3 billion of the $45 billion they got from Congress last year on creating this new system, with the rest presumably going to keeping the current system running while they get all these new warehouse camps online.

The endgame is mass deportation. The goal of this plan is to rebuild the entire detention system from scratch, turning it into “[Amazon] Prime but for Human Beings,” where ICE has a standardized detention system that moves people from arrest to processing to deportation as “efficiently” as possible.
