Its very likely a chicken of the woods and it sorta/kinda has a chicken flavor and texture-ish. The outer edges are the best part, getting pithy as one gets to the obvious origin point. I collect the whole thing, saute the edges and dehydrate the tough parts. Grind into a powder and sprinkle umami.

Not to make excuses for anyone, merely identifying a source of local malaise! We all have to own how we treat one another.

Tensions are a bit high right now. I think a lot of folks don’t like change and the recent influx has people on guard. There’s been a rash of rude behavior, not to mention the government accounts trying to establish a beachhead here.
