Bungendore usually cools off faster than in Canberra (little UHI, topography not trapping heat as much) but even here it was stifling at 2300 hrs that night, thanks to the strong NW wind. We only topped out at 36.5 compared to 39 in Canberra, still well short of the 40C+ heat we can get these days.

Any work on better understanding the SAM is welcome! Looking forward to more research on SSWs in the Southern Hemisphere as well- which may push the SAM in the opposite direction, at least in spring.

I'm used to it here- the areas around Canberra can resemble the high desert of the US at times. A marked contrast to the nearby humid coastal areas. Freezing at sunrise but T-shirt weather a few hours later.

I had -1.5C (29F) at 700 m just east of Canberra and a little higher (700 m).

The SSTs off parts of the South Coast have taken a dive recently due to the constant W-SW winds. This is probably going to suppress rain below 35 degrees south even when the easterlies return, a good example of the negative feedback of the negative SAM.

We need a negative SAM that's off the charts to bring those polar easterlies north, giving eastern NSW a good drink (and maybe sea level snow). The King Of Wishful Thinking? The wind says 'Go West', naturally.

I had -4.6 at Bungendore, though not an official BOM site of course. Likely at least a short term record also, as that's below the Goulburn AP Nov record. Goulburn AP was a bit too far north for the coldest temps this time round.

Nice for Mount Ginini, although it's above 1700 m ASL it's very exposed. I usually record lower absolute lows at only 700 m. Last night was mostly disturbed with T850 around -2 to -3, so was colder at elevation.

And the reason Braidwood is often the same temperature (or even cooler) than Bungendore in a NW wind despite the leeward position of the former.

Awful. Australia and Canada are comparable in just about everything, now you can add wild(bush)fires to the list.

The more WNW'ly systems also favour snow/rain in the Canberra area, due to the strong rain shadow cast by the Brindabellas with SW'ly systems. To get snow at low elevations around the ACT though, fluky precip bands straight from the south are the best bet.

Spot on. Spring-like weather has started around July 20 in recent years, though it's dubbed 'fake Spring' in the cooler climes of Canberra.

Right over the warm patch of SSTs which is no surprise; the patch of subtropical 21-22C SSTs extends nearly to 35S offshore. The ECL might erode these anomalies at least temporarily, much like a TC does in the tropics.

Some freezing fog around Warri (near Braidwood) this morning also, all trees white.

Fog has persisted all day against the Brindabellas. I don't think today's low maxima under the fog will survive the 0900 reset tomorrow, though.

Morwell is also quite coastal in general, though somewhat cut off from the ocean by a nearby range.

My town near Canberra (700 m/2296 ft/valley floor) hasn't fallen below -2.5C so far this season. Some of these places that are beating this are near sea level, e.g. Morwell. Normally at this time of year it's cloudier and wetter in VIC, SA and drier in NSW.

You could localise it further. 'Severe drought continues in Tumut, whilst Braidwood is sodden.'

And that's summer like convective cumulus over the Brindabellas. I had a rogue -2C in Bungendore but aside from that, nothing resembling the cool season yet. When the snowfields shut up shop and Thredbo is cheaper, I'll be moving.

Awful. Endless heat and not a drop of rain so far this month. It's a dry climate but not the desert (ironically, the real deserts are wetter atm). Here in Bungendore it's a couple of degrees cooler, part of the reason I live out here. Braidwood better though!
