Which will work until students know to prompt the LLM to make occasional typos

Linguist, father, wishing he had a law degree at the moment
Which will work until students know to prompt the LLM to make occasional typos
22.05.2025 17:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβm currently interpreting typos in student papers as a great sign of non-LLM-generated work
22.05.2025 17:19 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0wait Iβve been on your site many times! Iβve toyed with teaching a summer class for high schoolers and was using your site extensively to ponder a curriculum
15.05.2025 04:31 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0What does it take to get something like linguistics into English curricula? Convincing policy people? Or just local teachers?
15.05.2025 01:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Amazing!! I know thereβs been more movement in that direction. And perhaps also google you next time before I respond π
15.05.2025 01:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0completely agree. I donβt really know what it would take to get linguistics into high school curricula but I think a lot of high school language courses would be more interesting and useful if we did
15.05.2025 00:50 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I find that its answers seem more plausible the less I know about the topic. You just have to Dunning-Kruger harder, Nicole
13.05.2025 18:49 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0not an expert on the topic, but my understanding of the term is that it's a pretty large tent including lots of folks with different kinds of exposure. I don't know if the term would specifically apply to you as people use it, but I'm guessing the research findings would nonetheless be relevant
30.04.2025 18:05 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0heritage speakers likewise come to mind for me. not sure what it means to "count" as a heritage speaker, but whether or not you count, the research would surely be relevant. Lots of heritage speakers have passive/receptive knowledge of a language without being speakers
29.04.2025 12:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0You going to publish the results of this? Iβm very curious to see what you learn. And/or I could participate if you were still looking for instructors
28.04.2025 17:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Sure, not saying we NEED LLMs for that. But it is convenient and interactive and the fact that itβs just a bullshit machine doesnβt undermine the use case. But donβt worry, Iβm on the same page with you for LLMs generally, at least so far (my students listened to you on a podcast for class on Wed!)
25.04.2025 15:46 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0the one use case that I've actually found useful is maintaining a non-native second language that has been atrophying. I wouldn't recommend it for LEARNING, but it's ok to practice recognizing sequences of word forms and constructing sequences of word forms in fake conversation
24.04.2025 17:06 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Spent an intro to linguistics class talking with students about this today. They are kind of magical but the fact that they are completely untethered to facts and reality makes them a risky prospect when they sound so believable otherwise
24.04.2025 02:41 β π 22 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I donβt get why this is confusing for people. Some people are explicitly pro-segregationist but most are not. I guess the rest are just unable to cope with the cognitive dissonance of liking America but also accepting that there isnβt actually liberty and justice for all
20.04.2025 16:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Bc LLMs are famous for being factually accurate
16.04.2025 01:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Itβs the time. Thereβs just none of it available, anymore
30.03.2025 08:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is my current Open Access dilemma. Though not that much of a dilemma bc a for profit would just sell it to the woodchipper anyway
21.03.2025 02:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If we werenβt going to use it to weather Covid, weβre definitely not gonna use it for this
20.03.2025 14:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hoping the same for mine
19.03.2025 15:58 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Commit to give talks places. Collaborate with peers who get annoyed if I donβt do shit. (Also recipes for anxiety and overcommitment, of course.)
17.03.2025 18:21 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This was our topic here in intro ling yesterday - would have loved to have a level-appropriate reading to assign to them. If you want to tests drafts on an intro ling audience let me know
11.03.2025 19:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0it's like he views the entire government as a reality tv show
07.03.2025 20:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I had an Intro Ling day slated for language policy, looks like we can specifically consider our own national policy now
28.02.2025 22:54 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0My main Swahili learning was a FLAS scholarships. Those will be next Iβm sure (out of DoE I think)
28.02.2025 03:48 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In firm agreement. Tho my cursing wouldnβt be nearly as creative
19.02.2025 03:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think it might actually be the law, now
17.02.2025 04:27 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It appears to mean it now means something like βMake Apartheid Great Againβ
16.02.2025 22:11 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Love your stuff but disagree here. An awful lot of folks supporting this whole mess think they ARE doing the moral, righteous thing bc of Christian nationalist ideology.
15.02.2025 14:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0we just submitted a manuscript finalizing a project that we've been working on since 2009. Moving at light speed over here.
15.02.2025 00:17 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Without even relying on spellcheck?! Show-off π
