There are a couple of episodes of the Mentalist that work this way as well. Where Patrick Jayne knows instantly who the killer is and the killer knows he knows.

It was on TV at a time when NZ's television was 70% UK, 10% Australian, 10% USA and 10% local. So I don't think it was a show that got a big push here.

I was far more likely to see something like Taggart or the Bill on TV.

So yeah, flew totally under my radar all this time.

The film was all about little questions and answers, tiny details and responses, a real cat and mouse game between the killer and detective.

And the resolution was suitably satisfying and I feel on a rewatch, id pick up more things as well.

The show isn't about big twists and reveals, its a character study about crime and detection. The little tells people have, the turns of phrase that give people away. Like in the first episode, a tell is that the murderer, when returning home, doesn't say "honey i'm home" or similar.

I sat an watched the whole pilot movie last night. It was slow paced as it was 1960s, but that made it better somehow.

The first 30 minutes was the murder being planned, carried out and covered up. The titular detective doesn't arrive until after that.

I found this approach so very pleasing.

I had never seen a single episode of Columbo until last night. I watched a you tube video about the show, going in thinking it was another police procedural, whodunnit show.

I was totally unprepared for the shows actual format and it legit blew me away.

I am ordered the complete box set now.
