Ughh. This "everyone loves their family" stuff bugs me because terrible families of origin are transparently quite common for queer kids. I long ago learned to be judicious in talking about my own parents, who are awesome, because this is so clearly not the norm. It's just polite.

This is also my position re: equity concerns. ‘get a good score on the test for which literally thousands of resources to prepare for exist” is far easier for low-SES applicants to navigate than the Byzantine maze of ‘holistic‘ admissions which have lots of unspoken rules, etc

My most extreme policy position on college admissions is that if you want to be really serious about admissions equity and preserving rigor, you just use some form of school adjusted GPA and standardized test scores and then lottery admit from all applicants above that threshold.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, statistical terminology is awful! in this case it arises from trying to cram something that's a little bit Bayesian into a frequentist framework, and you don't really need to care about the details unless there's a crotchety pedantic statistician around

as I understood it, specific values of random effects aren't conventionally considered parameters in frequentist-land, they're "predictions" (hence BLUPs)
