I like to think (when I'm feeling charitable) many of those stay-at-homes were so comfortable in their privilege they could not imagine Americans would vote for Trump and their vote wasn't necessary. Other times I just think there are that many mysogynistic, racist a*sholes in this country.

Well, when Americans were given a choice between a child molester with 34 felonies and a successful black woman, they did not choose wisely. A certain segment of America has a real problem with women in the Presidency. Trump has only ever 'won' elections against women candidates.
