Yeah I had a similar coworker who believed the theory that the plane that hit the Pentagon on 9/11 was actually a missile strike. I think what it boils down to is that conspiracy theories are not based in logic, so being smart has absolutely no bearing on whether or not someone believes them.

I’m gonna take this seriously for a sec to say the difference between wanting things to be a way from OCD vs. ASD is with OCD it comes from anxiety while with ASD you just really like things to be that way. And ND is largely a grab-bag of traits, so this is likely ADHD with an ASD overlap perk.

Snark aside… I think it’s just seeing this person dig a hole towards thinking β€œmaybe we’re all just AI!” rather than engaging with how LLMs are designed, when there’s a real issue now with tech bros thinking ChatGPT is alive. But if they’re reading cog-sci at all then maybe I should be encouraged.

Yeah it just feels like… β€œI just got back from my first class of Philosophy-101 and it blew my _mind_. How do I know you’re not just a shadow on the wall? Tell me!”

Ah dangit, this must be a different issue than I had. Sorry about that.

Being in airplane mode causes that new license agreement message to not display. Though if you’ve already accepted it maybe that does something?

I did this a few days ago and things may have changed, but what worked for me is… turn on airplane mode before you open TikTok, open it and get to the account menu, then disable airplane mode and select β€œdelete account.”

Back in the day I knew a guy who'd set up a faraday cage in his office, with an electromagnetic coil wrapped around the doorframe that, he claimed, was strong enough to wipe his hard drive if his computer was ever seized. He was a lawyer.

I like how this is a warning, as if it's somehow our job to make them money.

One thing you will never think after reading a great book or listening to a great album or seeing a great piece of art is, β€œI’m really glad this person remained cautious while they were making this and guarded against being perceived as weird.”

"They found the coats on Thursday morning.

Fifteen winter coats. Good ones, not garbage. Hanging on the chain-link fence outside Lincoln Elementary. No note. No explanation. Just coats zipped up like ghosts waiting for bodies.

Principal Morris freaked out. Called the police. "Could be stolen"

Huh. Then I'm glad to have entirely missed the discourse concerning Not So Shoujo Love Story, because it seems like that must exist if this is a whole thing.

A thread of how to say β€œnobody asked you” from around the world, starting with this one…

A Lithuanian way of telling someone to mind their own business is ne tavo kiaulΔ—s, ne tavo pupos. It means β€œnot your pigs, not your beans.”

Context Widows or, of GPUs, LPUs, and Goal Displacement

I wrote a piece on LLMs, citation metrics, and the institution of science. It's been up for a couple of days, but it is officially "out" now.

Who’s vetting ideas anyway. Is the definition of a good idea what will make a billionaire money at everyone else’s expense? Because otherwise I think we have plenty of good ideas. We just lack the resources to execute them.

I always saw the shining city metaphor as a place where everything is fake shiny and whatever doesn't fit is eradicated. I think in part because of how it places America materially above everywhere else rather than making it a part of the world.

I really wonder how many of these assholes actually believe the things they’re saying vs. how many know they’re just making shit up to justify those government contract dollars.
