in a flash, an influencer who didn't understand the subject he was talking about cemented the idea that the broadband grants included in the infrastructure bill were a complete and total waste because it took longer than he, a nonexpert in the field, would have liked

my instinct would be to look at other visual media - eg, tv shows/talk shows filmed at home and/or posted on youtube and see what survives. (Thinking about the short lived good news series by Jake gyllanhaul?)

is the erasure of GGGs at home a deliberate manipulation of our collective memory of a public health crisis, furthering the conspiratorial histories that now shape US policy? just kidding :)) good find - my guess is some idea of “production” quality being viewed lower in a home setting than a set.

Some of the highlights. It will be interesting to see how it unfolds, but current status is not optimistic.

Control the infrastructure & you control everything.

The entire policy establishment (gov, media, academia) is still catching up to this.

then it poses another larger question to grapple with: if you don't trust the government to enforce the TAKE IT DOWN Act appropriately, what policy do you trust the government with currently?

& I'm not sure. what I do think is a need for SMALLER platforms online and community-led moderation tools.

Ultimately, even though I agree with the intent behind the bill, I find myself concluding that the potential short and long-term harms likely outweigh the much much needed good this bill has the potential to do in the long-term. (6/7)

Wondering to what extent it makes sense to place responsibility on the platforms used to generate this media in the first place? Also wondering if there is an argument to pass the bill now and then hope it's a useful tool in the possible future where a working executive branch is restored.... (5/7)

It's also telling to look at the preemptive self-moderation of content by platforms under the UK's Online Safety Act. Less serious than political dissent, but I saw a great story today on the end of a niche MMO Urban Dead: boingboing.net/2025/03/04/f... (4/7)

Until we have a functioning legislative branch (with checks and balances!) we should not give the largely unchecked executive branch any more power to potentially censor critics, even if they plan to do that regardless of the law. (3/7)

It's a great article! While I am deeply frustrated that we lack enforcement mechanisms to protect vulnerable populations from nonconsensual images posted online, it's naive to pretend it won't be selectively used online to censor legal satire or criticism of public image. (1/7)
