Making the case for a third AI technology stack | Brookings Brooke Tanner and Andrew Wyckoff explain the benefits of a third AI stack and how it could be achieved through governance and coordination.

Sharing a new commentary with Andrew Wyckoff that argues for a third democratically-grounded “AI Stack”.

The EU doesn’t have to — and shouldn’t — go at this alone. Smart partnerships will bolster investment & supply chain capacity.

Book cover "The AI Con: How to Fight Big Tech's Hype and Create the Future We Want"

I'm halfway through The AI Con by @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social, and I'm already convinced it's the most crucial book of the year. Every office manager in the world should read this to Weed-It any lingering sense that generative-text snake oil has ANY redeeming value.

Jon Stewart And Ezra Klein Help GOP Paint Infrastructure Bill Broadband Grants As A Useless Boondoggle We’ve long noted how the 2021 infrastructure bill included $42.5 billion for broadband dubbed the Broadband, Equity, Access And Deployment (BEAD) program. Managed by the NTIA and individual s…

in a flash, an influencer who didn't understand the subject he was talking about cemented the idea that the broadband grants included in the infrastructure bill were a complete and total waste because it took longer than he, a nonexpert in the field, would have liked

my instinct would be to look at other visual media - eg, tv shows/talk shows filmed at home and/or posted on youtube and see what survives. (Thinking about the short lived good news series by Jake gyllanhaul?)

is the erasure of GGGs at home a deliberate manipulation of our collective memory of a public health crisis, furthering the conspiratorial histories that now shape US policy? just kidding :)) good find - my guess is some idea of “production” quality being viewed lower in a home setting than a set.

We are hiring a pre-doc at Stanford to work on (among other things) a project called Public Pulse, which will provide reports on public opinion in the US, and potentially fill the void of things like 538. Please share with your undergrads. iriss.stanford.edu/predoc/2025-...

1 reason @wired.com is leading is b/c they have long understood that tech is the infrastructure of *everything* & as a result is *the* invisible lever of power.

Control the infrastructure & you control everything.

The entire policy establishment (gov, media, academia) is still catching up to this.

then it poses another larger question to grapple with: if you don't trust the government to enforce the TAKE IT DOWN Act appropriately, what policy do you trust the government with currently?

& I'm not sure. what I do think is a need for SMALLER platforms online and community-led moderation tools.

Ultimately, even though I agree with the intent behind the bill, I find myself concluding that the potential short and long-term harms likely outweigh the much much needed good this bill has the potential to do in the long-term. (6/7)

Wondering to what extent it makes sense to place responsibility on the platforms used to generate this media in the first place? Also wondering if there is an argument to pass the bill now and then hope it's a useful tool in the possible future where a working executive branch is restored.... (5/7)

Free zombie game Urban Dead announces shutdown after 20 years due to UK Online Safety Act requirements A popular, long-running, free-to-play multiplayer zombie games is being forced offline by new UK legislation. Urban Dead, which launched in July 2005, will shut down on March 14, 2025, due…

It's also telling to look at the preemptive self-moderation of content by platforms under the UK's Online Safety Act. Less serious than political dissent, but I saw a great story today on the end of a niche MMO Urban Dead: boingboing.net/2025/03/04/f... (4/7)

Until we have a functioning legislative branch (with checks and balances!) we should not give the largely unchecked executive branch any more power to potentially censor critics, even if they plan to do that regardless of the law. (3/7)

Read the Full Transcript of President Trump’s Speech to Congress In a speech to Congress in his first weeks in office, the president laid out his vision to remake U.S. policy on the military, trade, immigration and foreign aid.

Trump himself said, winking, "And I’m going to use that bill for myself too" during his address to Congress: www.nytimes.com/2025/03/04/u...

While I support the intent of the bill, Adi Robertson's excellent argument that "Congress has accepted it’s passing suggestions, not laws" rings true. (2/7)

It's a great article! While I am deeply frustrated that we lack enforcement mechanisms to protect vulnerable populations from nonconsensual images posted online, it's naive to pretend it won't be selectively used online to censor legal satire or criticism of public image. (1/7)

it’s not about the single use itself, it’s about normalizing - even justifying - the practice at scale. it’s worth interrogating your role in systems that contribute to climate change even if you are not individually to blame for climate change 💛
