The Joker showed the right way to deliver "tragic backstory" in an irredeemable villain. The first time he told the story of his scars, I felt a pang of sympathy. The second? I found that myself, particularly with the final film. World-building should be floor and walls and ceiling, there in every frame but not intrusive. When they start opening up the walls to show you how they're built, stories tend to drag.
