Block is a tech function that’s necessary and is there to be used.

Feelings about being blocked by someone are just a social behavior, and assigning meaning to getting blocked is extremely arbitrary.

One of the cool things they don't tell you about LA is that there are so many corners to consume and enjoy Hollywood culture from the good ol days. Movie rental places, tiny theaters showing classics, museums, shops selling one sheets and old scripts. It's really a big sell for a nerd like me.

Love to quote “All restaurants are Taco Bell” if any reference to this film (or the Demolition Manification of our reality) pops up

There is stuff that even people from outside the 80s feel is very early before 1985 (like 1982). This is the only explanation.

I’ve come from the eighties to tell you that it took like 20 years to get through the eighties.

okay if you could magically become the greatest figure skater in the world for a day and deliver one banger performance that would live on forever, and if you could truly let your freak flag fly to choose ANY music you wanted, what are you skating to

I might do “Black Jack Davy” by Steeleye Span

Was the Legend of Zelda Actually Named After Its Heroine? — Thrilling Tales of Old Video Games Why the princess of Hyrule may not technically be the series’ title character.

If you ever thought it was surprising that Nintendo named the Legend of Zelda series after the imperiled princess that only shows up at the end of the game... well, maybe they didn't.

Trek is a Necessary Fandom for me and that is permanent.

An annoying Trekkie Gen-Xer, I can’t speak to Kids These Days and their attention spans because brain slightly spicy and I haven’t the acculturation to tv as an adult (because I do not find it riveting).

How I listen to trek is video with subtitles/captions on. New trek I give to the biggest tv/monitor in the house and I mostly-watch, alone. I recap dialogue from captions and mostly don’t watch action or effects. I’m behind on the latest 3 shows.

I’m watching ENT with my FOD micro community. A show I don’t precisely like. But any tv isn’t sufficiently engrossing for this brain, and I’m on my phone in the group text of a watch party.

How far back in time can you understand English? An experiment in language change

If you liked this experiment, I published a full piece today in the same vein: a text that gets 100 years older with every section, from a modern blog post to a medieval chronicle.

It's a single story spanning 1000 years of English. See how far you get.

Written English has barely changed in 300 years. If you can read Harry Potter, you can read Robinson Crusoe (1719).

It seems like a lot of people start hopelessly floundering at 1200—that’s where I got stuck—and I suspect that’s because 1200 is where the *characters* start majorly changing beyond what context clues can really help with

Humanity in the Paleolithic could only account for about 12-14 hours of actual work a week (including wearing your molars down chewing hides) so obv the rest of the time was for art, song-making, myth, relating and sleep.

YouTube video by Olympics Alysa Liu wins the Olympic gold medal for the United States

I urge you to stop what you're doing and watch Alysa Liu's free skate from yesterday. I have never seen anything like this. I understand why sports writers are born now. I have never seen anyone as free from the burdens of this world as this pierced Oakland girl spinning to Donna Summers.
