Indeed, that was one of the bits of culture shock when we emigrated. Holly evidently doesn’t appreciate winters where it stays well below freezing for several months. I think my neighbour was only able to plant his due to warming weather trends, they were the first I’d seen holly in 30 years.

It seems to flourish in some places on the west coast, I’ve seen big hedges in BC, but it doesn’t like the winters in eastern Canada. My neighbour carefully covers his over, and even so only one of them made it.

Amazing pic! I miss holly here in Montreal, although my Filipino neighbour has managed to keep a little bush of it alive.
