ZeroFS Documentation The filesystem that makes S3 your primary storage. Mount S3 buckets as local filesystems with NFS or 9P or use them as block devices with NBD.

ZeroFS has a website now :)

For sure, I just mean these things are complimentary, not competing. You need something like JDBC for distributing drivers, and you need something like Flight/gRPC as a wire format.

Tho I guess you don't need drivers if you're totally inside the Arrow ecosystem.

Neither JDBC nor ODBC is a wire format, and in fact many JDBC drivers use gRPC under the hood. The huge benefit JDBC has is that you can trivially distribute drivers, which neither ADBC nor ODBC is good at.

Why are Chinese AI companies releasing their models as open-weight, while U.S. companies are keeping theirs closed-weight?

It's not because Chinese companies are more supportive of open-source β€” it's because U.S. companies are incumbents, while Chinese companies are challengers.

I'm optimistic about the current trend towards smaller, dumber models that can go find answers and use external tools. Theoretically they can retain reasoning and intuition without needing to memorize a bunch of garbage.

+1, presenting intuition effectively is its own skill. In the story, an Intuitionist surreptitiously just does things cuz she can't explain or convince people otherwise. This is one reason I advocate for "demo-driven development" at work. It is often easier to just Do Things.

There are obvious parallels to LLMs today, but I know some actual people with this skill too.

With LLMs, we all have access to profound intuition, but many people haven't figured out how to use it yet. Maybe they are the same people who never learned to leverage their own intuition.

Naturally, some people in the story think Intuition is bunk. They refuse to leverage these people, on the grounds that they aren't always right and aren't even really human.

Others use them secretly, as if in shame.

Asimov wrote about Intuitionists - superhuman pseudo-scientists that quickly leapt to conclusions in fields they hadn't actually studied. They weren't always right, but their offhand suggestions might lead a real scientist to a previously evasive solution.

Put aside LLMs for a minute and you see the underlying problem. It's very difficult to justify paying any devs anything at all these days.

An interesting thing is that a graph DB is roughly equivalent to an index in an RDBMS. In order to justify using distinct infra, you have to deliver something somehow better than CREATE INDEX. Which is really hard to do.
