Worth noting that I am in Canada, but I think our financial situations have been relatively similar over the last few years (our political situations less so).

Lots of this is correct, but I disagree that food is a very small share of most household spending. Our biggest line item is our mortgage, 40% of our take home pay. Second largest is groceries, at roughly 12-13%. Maybe we are abnormal, but thatโ€™s not โ€œvery smallโ€ And we donโ€™t even buy meat.

I have a certain (small l) libertarian streak, where I really donโ€™t like forcing people to do things. But I wish everyone had to/got to experience living conditions different from their own. My rural family might also understand the city better if they went for longer than a day.

Haha, thatโ€™s such a great quote from Mitchell, not going to lie.

Oh man. That hold your right foot slipped off of; I swear Iโ€™ve popped off its identical sibling many times. Vicious sloper.

(at least relatedly,) it's important to find the right balance between "if it's worth doing it's worth doing well" and "if it's worth doing it's worth doing poorly"

I think reading the plot summary has its place periodically.

Sometimes a show has an interesting premise, but has become un-enjoyable to watch as the writers drag it out. And sometimes the show remains great, but watching it is negatively impacting my life, as I should be doing other things.

Obviously with a lot of things the journey is the point, and I wouldnโ€™t want to miss that.

But specifically with television, a lot of shows reach a point where I kind of want to know what happens, but Iโ€™m kind of annoyed with both myself and the show. Iโ€™ve done this before, and been glad I did.

Iโ€™m an outside observer, across your northern border. But Iโ€™m not sure the train wreck is even in slow motion anymore. Scary times.

Iโ€™m sad it had to written, but that fuckin slaps.

I have a 3 year old and a 2 week old, and I had a great Fatherโ€™s Day with both of them. But while things even out as time goes on, I am reminded that for the first year or two, we should probably skip the dads and just celebrate Motherโ€™s Day twice.

Iโ€™m maybe a touch skeptical of that exact claim, but sadly it absolutely could be true.

Really feel for folks in the states right now. Scary time.

The number of people who are anti-factory farm is pretty close to the number of people who are pro-cheap groceries. And folks tend to be pretty good at not looking too hard if they are a few steps removed from the consequences of their actions.

Iโ€™m somewhat curious what leads to the need to anesthetize fish for cooking? Research I could understand, or animal husbandry, but there is obviously a gap in my knowledge here.

I think motivated reasoning is a bigger problem than amateur research; but yeah, itโ€™s obviously gone wrong.

More like goat than venison for sure, but also distinctly its own thing. I guess itโ€™sโ€ฆ sheepy? Like think of a sheep cheese with distinct sheep flavour and then transfer that to meat (obviously it doesnโ€™t taste like cheese, but maybe that helps)

Obviously not directed at me; Iโ€™m curious what someone from NZ thinks.

I grew up on a sheep farm in Ontario. I find Ontario lamb to be milder than NZ. NZ lamb somewhere in between the lamb I grew up with and mutton, which I find to be quite strong. Mutton I find gamey, and a bit like eating a barn.

TBT to my proudest rock climbing accomplishment; before kids, when I was stronger. But @patr1ck.bsky.social gives me hope that I can get back there again.

You are correct on both counts.

But itโ€™s also true that for the last couple years, the NDP was carrying significantly more influence than they had for a long time, and they didnโ€™t do that much with itโ€ฆ

Not nothing though!

I ran out of time for mango shopping last weekend, but hoping I can make it to Kohinoor for a box of alphonsos while they have them.

Sometimes I get inspired to make something, but mostly I just like eating them over the sink.

Last time I was in Bend, 7 years ago?, I had a dish of Burmese fried cheese at a restaurant called Spork. Went back the next night to have it again!

How about some tourism north of the border? Since legalization, most Canadian cities have more pot shops than they could possibly sustain. Of course, youโ€™ll have to imbibe here as well - might as well just stay

I could tell a lot more about this story - the intersection of progressive ideas about discipline with conservative ideas about spending; administrators who fail to do their job.

But my wife (a teacher) had a co-worker quit after 2 students repeatedly called him the n-word.

Also, I live in Toronto. We got 2 feet of snow last week. Iโ€™ve seen a lot of slipping cars with bad tires and bad drivers. But I imagine people LOVE to take videos of slipping cybertrucks.

18.02.2025 00:28 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Mostly itโ€™s just the tires. Though the ground clearance probably isnโ€™t helping, and nor is the driver.

One other issue I have encountered in some vehicles is a traction control that reduces power if it senses any tire slippage. Have to over-ride it. No clue if the cybertruck has a system like that.
