going to have to try to take notes because its like 800 pages and going to take me forever to read and i will forget everything probably

have huge implications in the reader’s understanding and our understandings of other people, how mystery is itself a tool to try to understand the world and the people around us, even if we know we can’t fully comprehend it anyway

the genre itself, that uses what we know about the world to try to make sense of what we do and why.
this is also why it feels pretty obvious that umineko was influenced by him in someway - the destruction and reconstruction of identity though mystery and narrative, how those small changes in story

doubt and investigation (and imo also intensely judging the character of yourself and others) all of which. lmao are clearly important in detective fiction

but its interesting that even though i imagine takemoto isnt religious his homage to a deeply religious writer is one that tries to dissect

it’s what makes his stories so interesting (and also i’m guessing this is what gets him that 四大奇書 spot)

but the chesterton thing was also interesting to me - i mentioned to my sister that the string of catholic mystery writers was kinda funny but she pointed out that catholicism is all about

even though its an homage to chesterton and father brown, yamaguchi says that in 閉じ箱 “takemoto places mystery itself on the cutting board for autopsy” with “the sharp knife of quantum physics”

he doesn’t dive much deeper into it since he doesn’t have the space, but i do think that

takemoto specifically didn’t want to study mystery and his brand isn’t typical whodunits (though some do take that form), it’s more like investigating people and physical phenomena through mystery, which is also why he brings up the titular story as the representative takemoto story

finally went through the 閉じ箱 (closed box by takemoto kenji) afterword and analysis yesterday and it focused on the two major themes of the breakdown of identity and meta/physical (as in like. physics) mystery
