This way of thinking carries through to this day. It's never been all sunshine and roses. Québec separatists and First Nations can point to times when the dominant white, English-speaking, Protestant majority were not so accommodating. But, generally, it's sort of how we've made it work.

Also, generally speaking, we're hard-wired to resolve problems by compromise. Nobody fully wins, nobody fully loses. Confederation is described as the Grand Bargain between the English and the French; no one got all they wanted but it was seen as better to be together than to be apart.

I think our unity comes from the intersection of our history and how we live our daily lives. There's an ethos in Canada that in order to survive the physical harshness of this place we need to co-operate. You never know when you're going to need help so we need to get along together every day.

Writing as a retired reference librarian from a major public Canadian reference and research library, we relied heavily on the amazing breadth and depth of statistical info and analysis that the US produced. A gold mine.

I was in Scotland in 2019 on vacation and developed a skin condition. The appointment with the doctor at an urgent care centre (very short wait time) and the prescription were both no charge. I asked and was told that tourists are not charged for medical needs of any kind.

I don't think it's point scoring & grudge settling. I think the rest of the world sees Americans destroying their empire and now feel emboldened to speak to Americans as they have been spoken to. Because Americans don't see others as their equals it feels like point scoring and grudge settling.

People in other countries have been on the receiving end of American condescension at the state-to-state and the personal level for a very long time. Now that it happens to you, and when you're feeling vulnerable, you get all pissy. You remind me of how the Brits reacted as their Empire vanished.

The West wall of our small 2-storey house ran along an alleyway, sun was relentless. Awnings over the 3 windows and a large lattice with Morning Glories growing up it meant that for the first time the central A/C cycled on & off, rather than running continuously. Huge savings.

Your faith that innovation will lower the costs of production and thereby lead to lower prices is touching. Recent experience has shown that lower production costs lead instead to increased dividend payouts or share buy-backs. The people still suffer price-gouging and the rich get even richer.

Harper's cuts led to huge losses of institutional knowledge. Followed by over use of consultants which compounded de-skilling of the Federal workforce. We once had one of the best bureaucracies of any national government. Not now and Carney's cuts will compound the problem, which JT tried to solve.

True. I'm a Manitoban who's lived in Toronto for 38 years. My physiotherapist said "I feel like the series united Toronto, possibly the country." After all, this is the city that has the National Ballet and the Canadian Stage company, Canadian Dance Theatre etc. They can't help themselves.
