The other day I saw a video of an historian (maybe?) saying he didn’t understand why billionaires are opposed to being taxed more because “taxation is the compromise.” And that last ~500 years teaches us what happens when that compromise is not struck.
Can’t stop thinking about it.

$500 billion a year is enough to guarantee a basic income via a negative income tax with a 50% phaseout rate for all Americans, ending poverty and significantly reducing inequality and insecurity.

This country is under some kind of wizard's curse where every 50 years there's a crisis that reminds everyone why it's bad for a small gang of obscenely rich assholes to control everything, and we go ohhh and then we all immediately forget again

I am never going to get over the fact thar so many Americans died that corpses stacked up in nursing homes and hospital morgues, that refrigerator trucks had to be brought in for the overflow, and that the big takeaway from Important Pundits is there should have been *less* mitigation.

I like this "hold up a yes/no sign to answer a yes/no question" thing. This should be a mandatory segment in all candidate debates/townhalls/etc. Sure would spare us a lot of performative politicking.

i've decided not to listen to the audio of a teacher reporting a kindergartender because frankly I don't want to become the person that that event would turn me into. but one thing I hope we are collectively coming to grips with is what it meant that we have lived among such people this whole time

Note, NYT assumes that DHS told the truth about what happened, which would be crazy because they literally Never Have when they shot someone, especially an American.

The state has nukes. So our personal firearms never actually curb the state’s weaponry in armed conflict, unless we all get personal nukes.
But the state doesnt have any final deterrence against free speech.
They arrested Dr Ozturk, but they didnt arrest Lefty McGunLover. The reason is obvious.

One of my favorite journos made the point that ohio state university banned sidewalk chalk in 2025, specifically to curb pro-Palestine protests, but they never even considered banning guns.
The state fears the first amendment far more than it fears the second amendment. It’s corny, but it’s true.

As Trump Threatens Iran, We’re On the Brink of a Generational Catastrophe
A US war with Iran would be illegal, immoral, and dangerous. We can still stop it.
There is not some gravitational force pulling the U.S. and Iran toward major military catastrophe. This is a war of choice by the U.S., and we must remember that it could be stopped in an instant.

Third American death linked to ICE crackdown uncovered by Newsweek
While the 23-year-old's death was reported in March 2025, it was not made clear that a federal agent fired the fatal shot.
For a whole year, DHS hid that they murdered Ruben, a young man in Texas, after a traffic stop.
Just like they did with Silverio, Renee, Keith, Alex, and Linda, they lied and avoided accountability. How many more people have to be executed before my colleagues realize that reforms are not enough?
