Having sequels instead of major patches would solve that and preserve all of it.

Having multiple versions of Street Fighter II, Alpha, III and IV has many jumping on points with differences that are preserved.

For V it is real hard to even be able to go back to previous versions, and likely that will be the case for 6:

Wish we would get a new Guilty Gear game already. I hate how long the post-release cycles for fighting games are now. I honestly wish we could recreate the KOF 96 to 98 method and era of just annualized games that change a bit game to game but a lot after sys 3 years instead of just new patches.
