Yup, I think it’s tough to communicate both that there’s a hierarchy in the classroom and also we’re human beings with a number of shared objectives.

I think when professors publicly shame some students, there are even more students who get scared and defensive, which makes things worse.

Let’s stick with the rule that if you can’t say something nice about your students on social media, don’t say anything at all.

Example: My students are great! And they’re no more flawed as human beings than I am, so let’s focus on my shortcomings instead.

So it’s bad if students publicly shame professors, but it’s good if professors publicly shame their students for publicly shaming them?

If you don’t respect students’ privacy, maybe you’re bringing this on yourself.
