By harnessing lessons learnt from recent academic and commercial space missions, making use of advances in AI to take on big engineering challenges around building autonomous systems, and building a stellar team, the answers to this core question are increasingly “yes”.

Karman+ founders Teun van den Dries and Daynan Crull are making this happen by breaking their vision down into byte sized steps, led from first principles, asking “can this actually be done?” at every step of the way.

Longer term, Karman+ will be able to mine enough resources to help supply deep-space missions, reducing the need for Earth-based resource extraction and polluting and expensive launches, making space exploration more sustainable, at a lower price.

Satellites, which can cost up to $500m to build and launch, are required to de-orbit when they run out of fuel, and need resupplying, or an external “nudge,” to extend their lifespan, with the market for satellite refuelling set to exceed $4bn per year by 2030.

Karman+ provides space missions with fuel and other materials, extracted in space. The company's first business model revolves (pun intended) around allowing satellite operators to more affordably extend the lifespan of their craft without having to resupply them from Earth.

The space industry is projected to hit $1.8tn by 2035, driven by companies like SpaceX & The Exploration Company lowering launch and spacecraft costs. Karman+ can become the enabling platform that fuels this new industrial revolution.
