Thank you for your thoughtful replies. My point, however is that the media focuses on the ethnicity/religion of those who commit criminal offences when it suits their, frankly racist agenda. If public safety were truly the goal, then our daily headlines would be all about white British offenders.

Why? Genuine question

White British men commit 80% of all criminal offences in the UK. Yet, the tabloid media and commentariat are only ever interested if the perpetrator’s skin is brown and/or their religion Islam. There is an urgent need to stop selective and racially biased reporting of crime.

We flounced out of the EU on the say-so of politicians who lied to us. And what a total shitshow that’s turned out to be. The polar opposite of what they promised. Now the call to flounce out of the ECHR. By the same people. Telling the same lies. Has the country been kicked in the head by a horse?

I know you mean that in jest, but with the UK withdrawal from the ECHR, and the repeal of the HRA 1998, the reintroduction of the death penalty is a real possibility. It’s of a piece with the anti-immigrant rhetoric.

The ECHR is much more than a treaty. It’s a quiet promise - a shield against abuse of power, a lifeline for the vulnerable, a declaration of who we are as a nation. In an age of upheaval and division, we must not let it be torn up for political convenience

Leaving the ECHR is just another "cause" that right-wing lunatics can latch onto.
