People can always tell if I’m spending time in my studio by the length of my nails.

Day 8 of #ArtAdventCalendar - a favorite hiking place. The scene is very recognizable for those who have frequented this particular summit. I love the simplicity of the large rock sitting at the summit. It looks ready to roll, but it's been there a very long time.

It's #ArtAdventCalendar day 7 already (!), and today we have a Boreal Owl!

These owls are very rare in this area, so this one was a delight to see a couple of Christmases ago. I was a long way away with a zoom lens, and there's a lot of cropping in this picture! #birds

I'm a potter and writer who sometimes takes photographs too. It's an attempt to capture the world around me, and what I find beautiful.

Day 7 of #ArtAdventCalendar - Thoughts about failure in art: Let yourself make mistakes, fail, have grand experiments. Struggle and surrender to get what's inside you on paper, in clay, on your instrument. If you do not you will be poorer all the days of your life and so will the world around you.

A predominantly white cat with red and black tabby markings around the top of the head and ears and soft green eyes. The cat is lying among willow leaves with yellow blossoms and rowan leaves with red berries. The cat has a sweet face, pink nose and pink toe beans.

Day 5 of #ArtAdventCalendar: Another great wildlife encounter from earlier this year... This Barred Owlet and its siblings were just beginning to explore the forest when I stumbled upon them. This youngster was very curious about this stranger in the woods. 🪶

Illustration of a Mariana Kingfisher. Like many kingfishers it has a huge beak and head on a relatively smaller body, with tiny feet. The head is mostly white except for a blue-green eyestripe, and the back is an iridescent blue-green. This appearance is common of the Saipan birds of this species, while on Rota they typically have more blue on the head.

For #ArtAdventCalendar day 5, a Mariana Kingfisher illustration from a few years back. I can't wait to see these squeaky friends when I go back to the Northern Mariana Islands next month! They fill the niche of a predator like a small raptor there, feeding on insects, lizards, & small birds. 🎨🪶🐡
