And, we found that the ROE Act (removal of parental consent requirement) reduced average time to abortion by β¨5.46 daysβ¨!
Perhaps unsurprisingly, this is almost identical to our estimate of the delay of 5.2 days in our original 2017 study!
In the recently published paper, we used a comparative interrupted time series design leveraging data from abortions...

In December 2020, Massachusetts passed the ROE Act to dismantle discriminatory barriers to safe, legal abortion in Massachusetts.
The Result β‘οΈ 16 and 17-year-olds can seek abortion care in consultation with their health care provider, without medically unnecessary barriers to their care!
Indeed, our work published in 2017 found that minors using judicial bypass had an average of 5.2 day delay (compared to parental consent).
We also found that this delay led to some minors becoming ineligible for medication abortion.

First, a little history refresher:
From 1997 to 2020, minors seeking abortions in MA had to receive parental consent *or* go before a judge.
However, almost all judicial bypass cases were approved... so this just created unnecessary barriers for young people.
