Maybe it’s Brexit trauma. Most UK politicians did a lot of pro-EU teaching from a national interest PoV tempered by anti-EU teaching when it came to further integration, solidarity and identity. A large part of the UK population just remained stuck in plain old 19th C style nationalism regardless.

The fact that large parts of the German media landscape “reported” on this White nationalist fever dream of a speech by Rubio as merely reaffirming the transatlantic alliance is so far removed from reality that it truly makes me speechless.

The referendum would not be won today, but the combined vote for Reform and the Tories is still a very large minority. Parliamentary majorities for ultranationalist and anti-European policies are still not unlikely.

Our shared civilisation used to be freedom and democracy. Now the Americans mean by civilisation the white race and kleptocratic authoritarianism. We Europeans tend to think of civilisation as culture. I share no culture with the likes of Trump or Vance or Rubio. They are uncultured hicks.

I’ll take the else

We shouldn’t be talking about that or about what identity adjective gets attached to whomever. We should be talking about why a large minority of people put that vacuous identity stuff above morality, prosperity and everything else.

Whichever way you look at it, the alliance with the USA was based on freedom and democracy, words conspicuous by their absence in US discourse these days.
