This comments section is the first time I've felt even a shred of hope in eight days.

The cruelty is the point.
They want you to panic.
They want you to give up.
They want you dead.
Don’t let them win.
You have to live.
Better days can only come if you’re still here.

Community is always hard. Cuz have you met people? But now is the day. Isolated, angry, overwhelmed people are easy prey.

Public speaking on ethics and community.

If you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, terrified, feeling powerless, etc.—they’re winning. Find ways to conserve your energy and attention and pick your battles today. If you can, take a walk.

This is as much a note to self as to anyone else.

DEI exists to help right the historic wrong of unqualified white dudes always getting the gig.

Healthy community builds diversity into unity instead of enforced uniformity. Real community supports our difficulties instead of monetizing them. Just community builds better humans for the sake of humanity rather than treating humans like livestock for the sake of shareholders.

If you have a purpose that matters, a process that doesn’t suck the life out of people, and real safegaurds against the predictable pitfalls of power, your organization will grow. I promise you. Your members will grow, your membership will grow, and your impact on the community will grow.

In any volunteer organization, transparency and accountability are foundational. The more beneficial the organization is, the more certainly that is true, because it is exactly that goodness that will be used as an excuse to cover up bad behavior.

Transparency and accountability are not extras we tack onto an organization after we get it up and running. That would be like shipping the car with seatbelts you have to install yourself. Yes, it’s technically still a car, but it’s stupid.

You didn’t ask to be born. If you were lucky, you had a real childhood, where dreams are real, and death is not. Then you woke up in this dumpster fire, and now you cope. That child is still part of you. Show yourself the same kindness you’d show any refugee. Unless you’re Republican, then stop it.

Every year, I watch Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve so I can gauge how old I am. This year I recognized half the artists. I’m middle aged, so… right on target.

The trick to growing a volunteer organization is to piss people off slower than they can forgive you.

Exercise: If you tell me I gotta pay money to drive across town and pick up the same chunk of metal forty times, hard pass. But if Joe can’t shovel his walk anymore, and he’ll pay in bad coffee and dirty jokes? Sign me up. The answer is always community.
