This Year, We All Realized That Kids Aren’t Reading Books in School. Only the Right Is Offering a Solution. Common Core and the College Board are my enemies. But the classical education movement is not my friend.

I'm late to this, but @annieabrams.bsky.social recently wrote a great piece on the stakes involved in reading and teaching literature, and it's essential reading for understanding what the "classical education" and charter-school "great books" people are actually trying to do.

A 2.5 inch screw extends well past the end of a plastic wall anchor. The anchor and screw were to attach a towel rod. The anchor is split in half

At my institution we have similar arguments being made from colleagues in the tech/science/business side. It is frustratingly shallow and intellectually short sighted

As an elder millennial I feel like Word is my version of peak 'back in my day'
Ie - back in my day we had to format our footnotes by checking a book!
Back in my day there wasn't an auto save function!

Kids these days don't appreciate how much easier it is to write a paper πŸ˜†

Cory Booker: "I don't want a Disney vacation of our history! I don't a whitewashed history, I don't want a homogenized history. Tell me the wretched truth about America."

Historians, crawling back into daylight from the depths of despair: "Did somebody somewhere ask for some wretched truth?"

Today in history class we discussed that societies in the past generally did not have freedom of speech and the construction of roads was as much for armies as for trade...
Thank goodness we don't live in that era...

Every day on the internet makes it abundantly clear that some people have never had a single person turn around and say to them, β€˜Cite your sources’ because, and I say this with every ounce of love I can muster as a teacher: while you are entitled to your opinion, that does not make it fact.
