Shocked to learn the Electric State was even this year, that feels like it came out eons ago but also I barely heard anything about it

I saw this way before the original, and it was probably only my first or second Tony Scott film. So while I can see its flaws especially compared to how great the original is, I have a real soft spot for this movie.

I wonder if it includes School on Fire and that maybe a 'complete' version might be able to get an official release someday, one of my favourites

... 88/Eureka might do some upgraded editions way down the line. I'm happy to wait for these now I know they're coming.

Given the fact they must've splashed out on these I feel like they're more likely to keep them in print/as accessible as possible to make enough money back. And now that they're at least 'out there' maybe long after Shout have put out their not-so-good releases...

E.g. I know some of the early Cinema City films like All the Wrong Clues/Spies will be incl. and I'm just as excited for those as I am the John Woo

Likewise even if most are dumped into a bare bones package together, I'm enough of a fan that all 156 titles are worth getting (eventually) provided prices aren't too high.

Not overly familiar with Shout as I'm UK and only own one of the bare bones Sonny Chiba sets but fingers crossed they license them out to 88 or Eureka for region B, then there's at least an alternative that should hopefully be better handled.

A funny coincidence that I also have a Bava and Shaw Brothers movie in mine.

A week late I guess but here are my favourite first timers from last year. Hard to nail it down further as I watched close to 500 movies but those that are in red text are "best of the best".

I immediately went and bought the dvd after seeing this during your mind melter stream. I've been meaning to rewatch it soon actually, this is a good reminder.

I still login to twitter sometimes...those "grand ideas"/"great questions" and it's literally just fascism. Way too easy to just find dozens of horrible racists there and while social media is already inherently bad for your mental health imo being on twitter is like sticking your head in a blender.

The best thing he ever did was that end credits song for Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey with all the dialogue samples imo (from what I've heard)

Such an insane take. It's like the accounts on letterboxd that follow thousands and end up getting thousands of followers back, why would I even want to trash my feed like that to begin with and never see reviews from the people I want to see... just for more meaningless likes on social media?

This is the copy of Chungking Express that my library has; got to experience this film for the first time the way it was intended for Western man, with the Tarantino intro and talk after the film. I shall have to find out if they have anymore of these.

It's not Christmas without...

28 Days because I find the obsession with digital slickness and technical polish in modern cinema frustrating. Idk if it's just me but I'm watching films and I cannot tell what's real and what's not; whether something has been smeared over with CGI, it ends up feeling like everything is artificial.

Saw this and given that coincidentally I watched this movie for the first time on DVD just a couple days ago I'll chime in and say that I loved the look of this film. Some genuinely beautiful shots and it seems some can't see that due to the low resolution. I wish more movies were shot like...

I liked this movie but coming to it after already seeing plenty of other HK wuxia/kung fu films probably did it no favours. I think if I'd seen this several years ago and it had been my first exposure to this kinda stuff it would've blown me away, like it did for many when it first came out.

I've heard that this release is sort of bootleg but that they had actually gotten permission from Pyun's widow and that some of the money will be going to her, but I guess they didn't really sort out the rights to this properly hence only 250 copies. I'm hanging on for hopefully a better/cheaper blu
