From The Secret Book, Part Two (1961), a three-part film that was a massive hit and later remade into The Magic Crane (1993). It's not very good even if there is a fire-breathing turtle that sets Lau Kar-leung on fire.

Every 1960s Cantonese wuxia film looks like it only exists on a series of glass plates or something.

You can tell things are going well in America because accounts with names like MovieTVFunZone are posting things like, "THE PIGS ARE KIDNAPPING CHILDREN AND PRIESTS. THE TREE OF LIBERTY DEMANDS TO BE WATERED"

Nope. Haven't done stuff for Eureka in forever.

I think there's a Peter Medak directed episode, too. Not sure if he's one of my guys, though.

Diving With Friends | finding treasure in 2025 12 friends share their favorite Japanese art discoveries

New post!

I bullied 12 dear friends into taking over my site to share their favorite new to them Japanese media of 2025 and got 12 thoughtful, funny, beautiful essays covering a huge variety of art.

Get cozy, because this is a big one!

Unfortunately, I haven't done any work with Shout. They have other people working on the subs for the US releases.

I also did new subtitles, which, perhaps most important of all, aren't timed for dual languages and don't jump about like the current ones do.

I hope you'll join me on the audio commentary getting lost in what I believe is Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai's most intricate yet poignant piece of karmic cinema.

I wrote and narrated the video essay to be included in this release, a history of Johnnie To's romances.

Beyond thrilled to be able to say finally that I did the booklet essay for this, my favorite of Johnnie To’s films.

"When he was young, Hou Hsiao-hsien went to a dance hall with Edward Yang. Yang stared at one girl and said, 'Look at that girl, the miracle of a girl becoming a woman.' Yang spoke with both admiration and amazement, but Hou recounted... 'No matter how I looked, I couldn't see it.'"

Mondo Macabro announced they're releasing Hong Kong New Wave obscurity House of the Lute. We're only three days into 2026, but it's gonna take a real doozy to top this for a more significant home video release of a Hong Kong film this year.

It's like a HK version of a gothic folk tale, not exactly something they're known for.

This was undoubtedly the best thing I got to do in 2025. May I continue to tarnish the reputation of cultural institutions around the world this year by being allowed to speak at them.

The 4K release of Operation Condor from 88 reuses the subs I did ages ago. Hopefully, I'll be able to revise any old subs I did for any re-releases going forward. And finally, I also did subs for A Hero Never Dies and Accident for Chameleon (comps haven't arrived yet). 6/

And more stuff for the freaks! I did my second solo commentary, again for a Shaw Brothers title, the late-period Sex Beyond the Grave. Being one of those movies with zero information out there, I was hoping I could dig deep and do something definitive. 5/

Now a pair for the perverts. I finished subbing the Erotic Ghost Story trilogy for the shiny box set which also reprints the piece I wrote for the original limited edition release of the first movie. I did some writing on Sex and Zen as well but not my best work if I'm honest. 4/

Obviously, I'm a huge Johnnie To and Patrick Tam head, but Sparrow and Nomad are important films to me (I do love My Heart is that Eternal Rose, too!). I only worked on the subs for these three even though I was desperate to do other stuff for them as well. 3/

Probably what overshadowed everything else, Ringo Lam's City on Fire. While it's my subtitles that have gotten the most attention, I wrote a very lengthy piece for the booklet which was the more enjoyable part for me. 2/

Yeah, Gundam's there because I'm easy. No Caught by the Tides and Eephus because I saw them last year. No The Secret Agent either because as much as it was a good time at the movies, it never got me fully on board.
