Incidentally, in the Cantonese dub of The Protector, the NYPD chief says he's demoting Jackie Chan to constable, something I kept in my original subs. I found a way around this for the upcomoing 4K to not break the illusion, so yeah, there's a lot of thought that goes into this.

Also, when it comes to Hong Kong, it was a British colony at the time, something that was definitely present. Most police jargon, if not all, was inherited from the Brits, which is why they say 'Yes, sir' and use abbreviations like PC for 'police constable'.

I shouldn't engage because this guy's got it out for me, but his narrow worldview is very telling. How dare these discs for the UK market use British English!

Not on the Blu-ray forums anymore but people link me posts whenever they're badmouthing me. A recent post (that isn't blindly negative) questions the necessity of translating slang, malapropisms, and accents, to which I say yes, they should be. What's the point, otherwise?

Thanks for the kind words. Stuff like the 'You're dropped' line is hardest to get right in my opinion. I was also thinking how dropping someone can also mean to ditch them for someone else.

I know my use of vernacular and informal spelling can be glaring but it's not done for no reason. The informal 'sonovabitch' better matches both the tone and usage of the specific phrase being translated here. If these characters were more refined-sounding, I would write it out in full.

The strangest mistranslation though was how the police are now ticket inspectors. I don't even know how you reach that conclusion. The archaic term used could be misunderstood to mean customs officers if anything, and that would still make more sense than ticket inspectors.

My main issues with City on Fire's subs were tonal, but Peking Opera Blue's are an absolute mess. Whoever did them doesn't understand the language, some lines even having the exact opposite meaning, and they're also completely unfamiliar with the history so it's full of made-up references.

I did a new set of subtitles for Arrow's just announced release of Peking Opera Blues coming next year. This one required taking certain creative risks to properly match the film's tone and energy (so I guess we'll see if that pays off).

Won't ever be one of my favourite of the Peanuts specials, but this is undoubtedly a powerful image.

I completely revised the subtitles I did a thousand years ago for the Hong Kong cut (and maybe something else) for this release. Hopefully I can do this for any other potential upgrades/re-releases down the track.

Some guy randomly found the original handwritten screenplay for Ann Hui's Boat People. Writer Chiu Kang-chien's original Chinese title was literally 'Boat People', but this was changed to 'Seeking Refuge to the Angry Sea' at the suggestion of wuxia novelist Jin Yong.

Been watching a lot of ER this past year, since it became one of our public broadcaster's go-to slot fillers, and realising just how much it influenced my childhood idea of what being a grown-up would be like.

This already blew up in China a while ago but it's only now getting serious since his remarks on the government and Covid, which are part of the recordings, has come to light. The screenwriter Qin Wen comes off worse imo but obviously you go for the bigger name.

Chinese media really going to town on Wong Kar-wai over this now. Turns out he also said some bad things about the government and their handling of Covid, whoops! Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
