I've heard that this research into ai consciousness is largely funded by ai companies. I haven't verified this but it does sound plausible.

โ€˜Itโ€™s about egoโ€™: Matt Goodwinโ€™s journey from far-right expert to firebrand Reform candidate Anti-immigration activist is contesting poll in borough where he previously researched far-right extremism

Makes me think of how Hitler was initially sent by the German army to infiltrate and spy on the antisemitic and nationalist German Workers Party in 1919. He found he agreed with them, so instead he joined, became leader and transformed it into his own party.

Left Wing Pitfalls: Against Neoliberal Identity Politics & Class Reductionism Does the left need to abandon radical ideas? Are liberation politics over? Do we need to return to class?

This fron Shanice McBean is really good on why both neoliberal identity politics and class reductionism should both be avoided. This is the orientation I've tried to take in my organising and work.

Goodwin is, at least partially, the product of an academic field whose main focus was the analysis of white supremacist politics but which avoided, and largely still avoids, talking in terms of whiteness or engage with the woke of those who study it from Du Bois onwards.

One possibility is that theyre testing how far they can go with using ICE like this, and/or trying to instill loyalty among ICE agents, for future use. Another is that like Mussolini they are trying to use terror and violence to try to demoralise their opponents before taking more power.

I've never seen Suella Braverman looking so animated. I do actually believe she is excited to be joining a fascist party on principle rather than just doing it for purely prudential reasons.

It seems clear Alex Pretti, a healthcare worker, was murdered for engaging in the exact kind of community care we hope all care workers to embody: the kind that doesnโ€™t stop at the threshold of the hospital, the clinic, but that aims to care for and support the community where and how they can

Thereโ€™s no such thing as a normal brain: Best ideas of the century Neurodiversity research has reshaped how we think about autism and ADHD, revealing that a โ€œnormalโ€ brain doesnโ€™t exist โ€“ and that unusual brains also come with unique strengths

Part of my argument in Empire of Normality was that normality very much does exist, and is determined primarily by the logics of colonialism and capitalism. The no such thing as normal framing obscures its material basis and force imo.

This discourse was fully there in 1930s Germany and britain as well as the U.S, where the great cities were seen as "polluted" (racially, sexually, etc.) versues purportedly pure rural populations etc. Current discourses are very much part of that tradition.
