An eastern box turtle nestled into fallen pine needles. I occasionally see this turtle on our cameras and am pretty excited that Mr. Boot Inspector has some company in the yard this year

If you have neighborhood Box Turtles
it’s hospitable to leave bits of your yard undisturbed
in case they need a bed😄

A flower has six bright yellow flowers that become read towards the central part has a wasp on it. The wasp is as long as the flower is wide. It is nearly all black with a very skinny long “waist” extending from the thorax that becomes reddish in color before a bulbous black end to the abdomen.

A Common Thread-waisted wasp, Ammophila procera, drinking nectar near Bayou St John this afternoon.

From what I could gather, there might be flies other than mosquitoes affected by the bacteria in the dunks and I love the golden-backed snipe flies & long-legged flies in our yard… maybe they would be ok too

Yes- they are a good option if you just can’t risk having mosquitoes… we don’t use them because we have elephant mosquitoes here who do not bite people and whose larvae eat other mosquito larvae

Our ponds like this (full of dragonfly larvae, newts, and other small creatures that eat mosquito larvae) have not added to our mosquito populations… we just have more yard friends that eat mosquitoes😄

It’s probably pretty crowded and hot in there… maybe this one developed a little faster than the rest and couldn’t wait to get out😄
